Battery flat, Not been used?

Supra not being used over the winter. Every weekend I start it up to warm it up and let it run for a bit.

Been starting fine, however yestersday I went to start it and and i turned the key it sounded like it turned over twice but didnt fire up, then the dreaded battery flat clicks started.

Jumped it and all was well, But why go flat?

Imo the battery looks a bit weedy to start a 3L engine, I just hope replacing the battrey will not reset my boost controller settings, as I didnt set it up and was told not to fiddle with it!

Would it be because its not moving, starting the engine drained the battery? All gizmos (boostcontroller, radio, led lights) appeared to be off in the cabin.

If I am correct. Turning it over uses about 4% of the battery's power and you then need to drive the car for around 11 minutes to get that power back. Running it on the drive for 10 mins or so will not be enough. I had this with my NA last year and thought I was doing the car a favour. My TT has now not moved since December but it is connected to a CTEK 3600 top up charger and it starts everytime with a fully charged battery.

I think it's the best £48 you can spend as a couple of winters on deadening the battery will pretty much mean it has to be replaced.

For a tight git you didn't do your homework very well Paul, it isn't like you :D

As Paul said it will be down to you starting the car and not letting it charge for long enough. Some cars, like my 106, can be jumped from dead and then fire right up after 5 mins of running. The Supra is a big ole brute and needs a fair whack of juice to get it fired up. The guess of 4% would depend on the condition of the battery and the capacity of it. If you have a fairly weedy battery you may find that it will be using 10% for each start, or even maybe more.

If your car is going to sit for a long time you need to do 1 of 2 things. Either disconnect the battery everytime it is going to be sitting (reset radio stations, etc etc etc) or buy a battery charger/conditioner.

I bought the £25 maintenence charger from halfords and it is nothing short of fantastic. It comes with 2 sets of leads, one set is attached to the battery and the other set is a set of crocodile clips. I have attached the proper leads to the battery and I have ran the connection out to the front of my bumper, so that I can quickly plug and unplug it at my leisure. I have used the crocodile clips to charge another battery, and to top up my current battery charged while I had it out of my car.

I can't get you a link now as I am in work but it is a great buy. Just search on halfords, I think it is £24.99 or something like that. Check stock though as there don't seem to be many on the shelves :)

Found this one, Sounds like the one you mentioned. Will pick one up tonight.

Do you think taking the battery out would reset my Electronic BC to factory settings?

Thanks

Hopefully disconnected though? As long as it is disconnected a battery will last AGES. Think about the ones on the shelf in Halfords :)

Yeah it's disconnected. Before it was, it wasn't starting the car properly without a jump though (when the insurance company had the car from March until July, they never turned it over).

It's worth noting that the alternator doesn't put out it's full current at idle. It needs revs. Idle will give you around 50% of the rated output, 2000rpm will give you 100% (or close too) of the rated output. So, running for 10 mins on idle will give you 50% less than driving around at 2000rpm...
