Guest moddy
Hi, i want to ask several questions about wastegates:- is a wastegate and a wastegate actuator the same thing? and which do the twin turbos have? what does it do? do the twin turbos have 1 or 2? does the size matter? do smaller or bigger ones give more power? can you just change 1 if you wanted to? where does a screamer pipe come in? what is a screamer pipe? thanks for your help
heckler
Hi, i want to ask several questions about wastegates:- is a wastegate and a wastegate actuator the same thing? No and which do the twin turbos have? they use an internal wastegate, activated via an actuator what does it do? Controls the amount of boost do the twin turbos have 1 or 2? one, on number 2 turbo does the size matter? Only on big singles (i think) do smaller or bigger ones give more power? Nope, wastegate dont add power, just control the boost can you just change 1 if you wanted to? internal ones, no, external - yes where does a screamer pipe come in? a pipe which comes off the wastegate to vent the exhaust gasses what is a screamer pipe? erm... a pipe thanks for your help Answer in red... Scott
hi, i want to ask several questions about wastegates:- is a wastegate and a wastegate actuator the same thing? no, the wasegate is the valve that allows the excess exhaust gas escape, the actuator is what controls the valve and which do the twin turbos have? they have both, as all turbos require. The wastegate is in the turbine housing itself, the actuator is on the outside (with the tt, others generally are all in the 1 unit and external) what does it do? the higher your car revs the more exhaust gas is produced. There will come a point where if the exhaust gas is allowed through the turbo it will over speed and over heat it. This can result in catastrophic engine failure not to mention the turbo damage. The wastegate is used to control the amount of exhaust gas that goes through the turbo, when the turbo hits the required level of boost the wastegate fluctuates open and closed to keep the boost level do the twin turbos have 1 or 2? they both have wastegate ports, the difference is where the wasted exhaust gas goes. Generally exhaust gas is recirculated or sent down a screamer. With the sequential system the exhaust from the 1st tubbys wastegate is used to pre-spool the 2nd. does the size matter? yes, the larger the wastegate the harder it will be to control at lower boost levels, the smaller the wastegate the less exhaust gas it can flow away from the turbo. They ideally need to be matched to a certain degree do smaller or bigger ones give more power? you won't get more power, just a better spool time and boost control if you match the wastegate properly. can you just change 1 if you wanted to? not with the stock tts, with all others yes. They should always be matched though. where does a screamer pipe come in? the exhaust gas can either be flowed into the exhaust or via a screamer pipe to atmosphere. Screamer pipe sound mental but can get old... Fast. what is a screamer pipe? see above thanks for your help hth

Nic
This video explains what a wastegate does and the difference between an external wastegate and an internal wastegate. The Supra has an internal wastegate on the second turbo. PA5T5PnWE-k
