tbourner
Anyone have any experience of insurance for transporting animals - namely dogs? Does it require anything special? We're looking at buying a van for use in the rescue to transport dogs between homes etc. Would probably be an ex-police dog van with 4 cages, so would all be secured properly etc. Ideally would require insurance to cover the dogs as well as the normal stuff, and ideally to cover a number of drivers, I don't know if that kind of thing is possible or if it would be prohibitively expensive? Would the rescue insurance cover vet bills from injury if the van insurance didn't?
Chris Wilson
You can insure pretty much anything you want, at a price. Not sure just what you are insuring against here though? Public liability if they get out and cause an accident? Cover for anything nasty happening to them in transit would possibly be a part of normal comprehensive cover if they were just your own pets, but the commercial element will change that. I'd make the buggers walk....
tbourner
Well they'll all belong to us so it's only to protect us for vet treatments after an accident and things like that.
Paul
Wouldn't normal Pet insurance cover for injury after an accident ?
tbourner
Not sure, will check with the founder. Assuming it does, and assuming the dogs aren't going to escape the crates and run off attacking random children, we can just get normal insurance or possibly business class? Next order of business; anyone any idea what ex-police cars are like? Example from here: http://www.fleetleasingltd.co.uk/, heard someone said they are maintained on the cheap and ragged to death? Chris Wilson
Normal pet insurance is tied to an individual animal, so they wouldn't normally cover "dogs" in general, they'd leave themselves open to terrible abuse. I think just risking it is best. If something happens to a dog you were at least trying to help. Public liability is a different matter, these days. Chris Wilson
Ex cop cars have usually done stellar miles with a nutter at the wheel covered to do what mere mortals risk their licence over every day. They usually have had good servicing, but tend to be got rid of when the real trouble is likely to start. Do you want an estate car or a van? I'd consider A/C essential if carrying many animals far in the hopefully scorching summer due us this year Show people seem to like one of the Hyundai or Kia (not very helpful, they all look the same to me...) people carrier things as they apparently have very effective A/C. tbourner
We need something with at least 4 crates in, and they need to be strong enough for big dogs that likely want to kill each other! the ex-police idea is good because they have crates fully built already so nothing for us to have to do. We'll be doing lots of miles all over the country though. Maybe a Skoda Yeti!
