Graham S
Right, to keep it short and sweet... Went to try and copy some music onto my 13 month old PS3 slim using an external hard drive, plugged it into the front USB port on the PS then it just froze. Turned it off, then back on again (HD still plugged in) and I got the wavy line thing and the PS3 symbol on the right as usual then just stopped there. Then got a message pop up saying "hard drive corrupt, press X to restore" So.. Pressed X, then started a counter thing, gets to 48%, holds there for approx 30 seconds, then continues to 100%, then restarts with the same error message. So after searching the net i've found a way of accessing the safe mode menu. Went into that, and tried every option there. Now I don't even get the wavy line screen or anything, just a black screen with "please connect controller and press PS button" Assuming the HD was buggered, I've bought another new drive, fitted it and still have the same issues. I connect the controller, press the PS button and it asks for the last software update (2.61 or something like that?) I've put that onto a USB stick but it just won't read it or do anything? Anyone know how long the warranty is on these things? Assuming its only 12 months? Or anyone got any ideas on what to try. Thanks guys (or girls if you happen to know how to fix it!) Wez
Sounds like you need to do a firmware update from recovery mode via a FAT32 formated USB drive. Do you know what firmware you was running before it crashed? You could use the Sony official 3.55 firmware from here http://www.ps3-hacks.com/file/238 Once downloaded copy the "PS3UPDAT.PUP" file into a "PS3/UPDATE" folder on your usb drive and then goto recovery mode using the following steps :- 1) Go to your ps3 console and turn it off. 2) next, hold down your power button until your ps3 turns on and then beeps 3-times and turns off again. let go of the button when off. 3) now hold down the power button until the ps3 beeps once and then twice and then let go of the button. you should now see the recovery screen. if it asks you to plug in your remote, then do it and hit the ps button. 4) scroll down to option (6) system update and hit x. follow the prompts. Once the update is finished, your ps3 will reboot. I have used this recovery method myself for loading firmware and it worked a treat

bobapple
You didn't have the external drive plugged in still while trying this did you as I know apple macs get fussy sometimes about booting up drives plugged in. Hope you get it sorted mate. Also just to let you know for the future you can copy music to your Ps3 via bluetooth just download some free software ps3 eyeconnect on your comp. Cheers Si

Graham S
The memory stick has to be formatted as FAT32, not NTFS or exFAT. Check! That i'm sure i've done! Will double check.. Checked, yip definately FAT32. Also do I need to name the stick PS3 or the first folder? then another inside that as UPDATE, then copy the UPDAT.PUP into that. Will go through it all again to be sure... Going to my sisters house now to look at her car so may stick the hard drive into my brother in laws PS3 and try it on his. Good luck fella. Will go through it all again to be sure Re-format the memory stick as FAT32, volume name is unimportant, then create a PS3 folder on root and within that create an UPDATE folder, place the downloaded firmware file inside the PS3/UPDATE folder and make sure it has the name PS3UPDAT.PUP the full path would be :- /PS3/UPDATE/PS3UPDAT.PUP
