Coming very soon, stainless steel brake caliper pistons.

I am making some batches of stainless steel Supra caliper pistons. These will not suffer the chrome plating coming off and the pistons corroding into the bores and sticking like the stock ones often do. They will be cheaper than new Toyota ones, too, as a bonus :) Initially I will be doing them for the front and rear of the UK / US / European calipers, shortly followed by J-Spec caliper pistons, which are quite different. If interest levels can be shown it would be helpful in me deciding how much material to buy in. Thanks. I will still be selling the stainless steel pad retaining pins and the VERY hard to get (Toyota don't even list them), inter caliper half square section passageway seals.

Great idea Chris, we've been replacing tired and pitted chromed rods with stainless steel copies for years on certain forklifts, especially those used in corrosive environments.

These should be a great success and when my own UK calipers need overhauling I'd certainly add these pistons to my shopping list of parts you'd be supplying me.

Sounds very very nice. As i don't know the going rate for stock ones, how much would a complete set(front and rear) of your pistons be for UK Spec Calipers? :)

What do you think when the first batches will be ready? I'm in the middle of refurbing my complete Brake System so would be nice to know :D

What sort of price Chris? Would you do an initial group buy to gain interest with an interesting price?

Depending on costs I would be after a full set of pistons (Front and rear), and possibly dependant on price the pins and the seals :)

Cheers

Need to work out some figures, I have new UK pistons for front and rear calipers coming from Toyota tomorrow, for some calipers I am doing, I'll put those prices up, but I am HOPING he stainless ones will be a fair bit cheaper. Still getting material and tooling prices. Whether I will refurbish in house I am not sure, everyone will want daft colours and no two will be the same. If you just wanted them Kephos 'ing satin black, that might be more tempting. Sending calipers to a powder coaters for Lambo Green, or Maserati blue finish would be a real PITA, and costly.

as you can tell i am having just short of a nightmare with my referb nothing is going to plan at all :(

so yes if you can get these i will be wanting some

BTW why are you calling the half seals square sections ???

The seals are not circular in section like an O ring but square in section and a special material. Toyota do not even list them. Took me ages to find a source.

We are looking at a minimum of two weeks before any pistons are made, but these will definitely go ahead.

Just a couple of questions on these Chris....

What will you be finishing the outer diameter with? Grinder or lathe? Just thinking of the surface finish for seal longevity. Also will they be case hardened? The chrome coating can take a HUGE amount of abuse, stainless although tough won't be AS tough. Lastly, what tolerance will you be working to?

Cheers

They'll be lathe turned, they won't be hardened and they won't prematurely wear the seals out.. Stainless is a poor conductor of heat so get the bonus of less pad heat in the fluid. They will be to the same tolerances to the ones for Jags and Aston Martins ( a good +_ 1/2 inch or so..... :)) that many owners race with as well as fit to road cars for longevity.
