Swampy442
Saw one on TV earlier, what an amazing looking animal. Just wondered if any of our dog owners have had experience of the breed, seen one, know the temperament etc?

The Raven
I looked into them alot before shying away from the breed. Not saying blame the breed ect, but with other livestock and a 2 year old boy running round i didnt class it as a great idea There are cases of them killing people/Horses/other animals in the states. They are also on the dangerous dog act in oz and banned from the country. Last i heard they where on the "watch list" meaning the goverment are thinking of expanding the D/D act to inc other breeds. I think the best advise i read was this. They are not banned but be sure you know what your getting into before getting one. They are a big and powerful breed with a very strong guarding instinct and an independent mind. They can be very difficult to handle and control unless you have experience of other breeds with similar temperaments. Guest rgvsam81
Are they the same as a cane corso cos we had one , he was very athletic and strong but could be trained easily as they are very inteligent and loyal , however the loyalty thing is why they are good guard dogs and they slobber alot , they wont fit into a supra haha

Chris Wilson
They are a totally unsuitable breed for 99% of the UK population, likely to get put on the Dangerous Dogs act and most for sale over here will be inter bred or cross bred. The temperament is unsteady, their job is fighting other dogs or predators, or for personal protection. I would trust a genuine one about as far as I could throw it. I doubt there's more than a handful of genetically correct ones in the UK though. If you have kids, have visiting kids, want a peaceful life with your neighbours, or just plain don't fancy being bitten unless you are 110% sure you can dominate such a beast, keep away I guess it could be worse and you might want a Caucasian Ovcharka, which are probably the most ferocious of canines We have Komondors and Anatolian Karabash, but at least I know where they have come from, lineage wise, and have plenty of experience in dealing with them. Nonetheless I have had some impressive bites over the years I would look for something else, maybe a Bull Mastiff if you like the mastiff type of dog? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caucasian_Shepherd_Dog http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perro_de_Presa_Canario http://www.justdogbreeds.com/anatolian-shepherd-dog.html http://www.justdogbreeds.com/komondor.html http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bullmastiff

My knowledge is Boxer based, had 3 now and should space allow Id like something bigger. Love Bull Mastiffs and on a grander scale Great Danes. Im of the opinion if you want a dog, get a real, dog sized dog!

edge
The pressa is not the average pet, an impressive and strong animal yes. You will find lots of these used for fighting the same way as pitballs and other poor breeds. I would love one of these but only if i had a good few acres of land. They have been cross breeding neapolitan mastiff x presa canario's for protection work and alot of handlers have said they will take their owner/handler out to get at the "bad" person. Chris Wilson
Chris out of wondering whats your thoughts on the Dangerous dog act? Unprintable, but basically potential dog owners should have a means test, a suitable home test and a violent criminal record check. It's not the dog's fault owners train it to be aggressive and a "status symbol". Similar tests should be applicable before having kids Like many recent acts it fails to address the root cause because it's politically incorrect to grasp the real issues, which is mainly the desire and media encouragement for sink estate kids to emulate drug dealers and criminals, rather than true role models. But I digress again Sadly many of these acts are unworkable and a waste of resources. I can make a very effective attack dog out of a Standard Poodle. In fact there's a house up the road with one where you would be mad to even shout at the owners, such is its guarding instinct, and it'll clear a field gate without touching the top bar! Swampy442
Which is why we have a Dane Id love a Dane, remember seeing a pup rampaging round a pub garden few years back, it looked like a baby giraffe Do they have health and hip problems/short life span? Or is that about as true as all white boxers are deaf and have cancer

Thorin
Id love a Dane, remember seeing a pup rampaging round a pub garden few years back, it looked like a baby giraffe Do they have health and hip problems/short life span? Or is that about as true as all white boxers are deaf and have cancer They can have hips problems, but if they're from a reputable breeder they shouldn't have. They can be more at risk of bloat (but less so these days), but this is the same as a lot of large deep chested breeds, avoid feeding for around an hour before/after exercise and they should be fine. DCM (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dilated_cardiomyopathy) is the biggest cause of problems in Danes I would say, but work is underway to identify the gene which causes it and breed it out of the gene pool (this has already been identified for other breeds now). Lifespan isn't great Average age is usually stated as 7 years, but this seems to be increasing. 'Kita is 7 now, and unfortunately has DCM, but it was detected early and she's been on medication for it for a good while now. She doesn't gallop around as much these days but she's still quite spritely and excitable, so she should hopefully have a few years left in her yet

Swampy442
I think its very true, theres no such things as bad dogs, just bad owners. Ive had a few rescue dogs, an although it can be hard to deal with excitable/non socialised/seperation anxhiety plagued dogs its immensly rewarding to to see results from training Thorin, theres always exceptions to the life expectancy rules, my last Boxer, Buster lasted until he was 14, and 10 is the supposed max.
