Removing Turbo Heat shield

Removing Turbo Heat shield, is this a mare to do as I would like to get mine cleaned up or replaced, can I remove it with most things still in place ?

Many Thanks

Si

I don't remember having any issues. 2 bolts IIRC, might be 3 though. Is it a Jspec? I know that the snorkel attaches over the top of it in the UK spec, so it would need to be removed first.

I think you can access it from the top end of the engine bay, at the bulkhead near the brake master cylinder.

Thats what I was sought of asking gavin.star, going of what Scott says sounds like just one needs to come off is that right mate? Not to sure what you mean by snorkel ?

Thanks

Si

As I said, Snorkel is UK spec. If you don't have a UK spec or a UK spec bonnet then you don't need to worry about it. The 2 bolts I remember are very accessible, they mount the heatshield onto the exhaust manifold. Careful though, lots of plusgas required as they might shear on you. They have seen a lot of heat over the years :D

4 bolts, but quite a bit of pipework first unless you bend and maul it off. Not a big deal.

Ahh yes, I remember now. 2 that you can access from where I mentioned and another 2 on the top underneath the pipework. My one was fecked so I think I did just rip it off, I then took the pipes of to deduce what was wrong with my 2nd tubby so had access to everything.

Are you sure you couldn't get to them with a spanner Chris? Would be a right PITA unless a ratchet spanner was used though :D

I don't know your expertise but it is a VERY good job to learn to do. You get to see how a lot of the turbo side of the engine works and all the ins and outs of the pipework etc.

If you fancy doing it, take out a digital camera and take a picture of every stage you remove something. There is an online manual with detailed instructions in removing the whole lot but I just jumped in feet first... was a great job :)

Do you drive the car daily? If not, and someone can get to you should you REALLY struggle then I would go for it :D

There shouldn't really be anything shearable leading up to the heatshield. Once you are at the heatshield is where it can go a little wrong. If it does it isn't the end of the world though. I bought a 2nd hand heatshield, cleaned it and painted it with VHT paint.... it's still sitting in my garage lol. I've been running without one for over a year now.

I'm sure I'll get round to it though :D
