Scott
Removing Turbo Heat shield, is this a mare to do as I would like to get mine cleaned up or replaced, can I remove it with most things still in place ? Many Thanks Si I don't remember having any issues. 2 bolts IIRC, might be 3 though. Is it a Jspec? I know that the snorkel attaches over the top of it in the UK spec, so it would need to be removed first. I think you can access it from the top end of the engine bay, at the bulkhead near the brake master cylinder.
SupraShaun
I was thinking this the other day as mine could do with a clean/ polish.
gavin.starr
Can it be done without taking all the turbo pipes off ?
bobapple
Thats what I was sought of asking gavin.star, going of what Scott says sounds like just one needs to come off is that right mate? Not to sure what you mean by snorkel ? Thanks Si

Not to sure what you mean by snorkel ? Thanks Si As I said, Snorkel is UK spec. If you don't have a UK spec or a UK spec bonnet then you don't need to worry about it. The 2 bolts I remember are very accessible, they mount the heatshield onto the exhaust manifold. Careful though, lots of plusgas required as they might shear on you. They have seen a lot of heat over the years
bobapple
Cool Scott thanks for that, I have heard of the bolts shearing, mine was off last year so hoping it's still a bit free, just to let anyone know priced a new one up from Toyota and it's £130 not cheap. Thanks again for the replys gents. Si
gavin.starr
£130 for a heat shield wow, I wouldn't have expected that, at that price I think I would clean your old one up.
Scott
I bought a decent 2nd hand one and tidied that up. Mine was in a bit of a state
Chris Wilson
4 bolts, but quite a bit of pipework first unless you bend and maul it off. Not a big deal.
Scott
4 bolts, but quite a bit of pipework first unless you bend and maul it off. Not a big deal. Ahh yes, I remember now. 2 that you can access from where I mentioned and another 2 on the top underneath the pipework. My one was fecked so I think I did just rip it off, I then took the pipes of to deduce what was wrong with my 2nd tubby so had access to everything. Are you sure you couldn't get to them with a spanner Chris? Would be a right PITA unless a ratchet spanner was used though
bobapple
Hi Chris hows things hope all is well, is this a job I could undertake as you know my handiness with a spanner isn't brilliant [OOPS][/OOPS], or should I leave it for when I get to come round for a visit. Cheers Si Edited February 7, 2011 by bobapple (see edit history)
Scott
I don't know your expertise but it is a VERY good job to learn to do. You get to see how a lot of the turbo side of the engine works and all the ins and outs of the pipework etc. If you fancy doing it, take out a digital camera and take a picture of every stage you remove something. There is an online manual with detailed instructions in removing the whole lot but I just jumped in feet first... was a great job Do you drive the car daily? If not, and someone can get to you should you REALLY struggle then I would go for it
bobapple
I have a nack of breaking bolts don't know how why but I am very good at it as Chris will tell you. He has had to remove two sheared bolts for me, luckily ones pretty easy to get to, but I am sure this gives you an idea of my confidence . Scott
There shouldn't really be anything shearable leading up to the heatshield. Once you are at the heatshield is where it can go a little wrong. If it does it isn't the end of the world though. I bought a 2nd hand heatshield, cleaned it and painted it with VHT paint.... it's still sitting in my garage lol. I've been running without one for over a year now. I'm sure I'll get round to it though
Chris Wilson
I'll sort it for you, should be able to look at it next week for you. Can fit the other stuff, too, no worries.
bobapple
, thank you mate, will be good to see you, might not be next week as I don't know when I will get all these bits together, but should be soon as all parts are sourced but some need to be polished etc will keep you posted.
