edge
Got a budget of about £7k and it has to be a diesel auto. I would like an accord but the auto diesels are still in the 17k mark. I like the C class but from 2004 as they facelifted the interior. The 270cdi's seem hard to find in budget, the 200 cdi seems down on power and the 220 cdi seems to be just right. The 270 is said to be just as goot and if not better on fuel than the 220. What gremlins lurk in these cars? I have read about dodgy oil coolers but not too much of a worry. Any other major points to check ?
Swampy442
Does an earlier Accord not float your boat?
edge
Does an earlier Accord not float your boat? Want something 2004 upwards really. The 2006/7 accord diesels are in my price range but they don't do them in auto's unfortunatly
wile e coyote
how about a volvo v50 or bigger v70 lot of car for your mony http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/2006-VOLVO-V50-SE-SPORT-D-E4-DIESEL-SILVER-FSH-MOT-/270700034931?pt=Automobiles_UK&hash=item3f06fabb73
Graham S
I wouldn't touch a Merc dude, they rot like you wouldn't believe. But they do have a 10 year corrosion warranty as long as it has full MB history. The E class is the worst though, but we do see a good few C class's and from 2005 back they are ALL rusty. If you do go ahead and look at one (or more) pay close attention to all the wheel arches, the wings right at the front by the headlights and the panel around the number plate lights. Other than that they are good cars. The 270 and 320 CDI's go like stink! Sorry if that sounds like a miserable reply!

Paul Whiffin
I had an E46 BMW 330D Touring Sport, loved it, perfect for my needs. Goes round bends, looks good, great build quality, gave an average of 43mpg and fast with it to. Sold that recently and bought a new shape one instead and thats even better, cant go wrong. My friend has one (he's old) and said its just a ford underneath as you can see ford symbol stamped in alot of the parts. I'm sure not all the models aint fords though. I thought that issue was addressed from 2003 onwards? as they started to galvanise. I will check the change over dates then to find out what time they started. But advise is appreciated though chap hes right dude, if its a workhorse that your after i would go japanese, i bought a Toyota Lucida (previa) cost me a Grand and honestly i have used it for everything, absolutely rock solid work horse! its got 170km on the clock and still feels tight as a drum. i put a huge sand bag from wicks in the back, must of weighed half a tonne but th ecar kept going on. why not even try a pickup truck, like a toyota hilax or nissan navara, seating for 5 and a flat bed at the back for all your loading purposes. I want a fairly decent return in mpg and the 4x4's seem to like a drink but all the old jap is good though. That's why i have been spoilt by the avensis. Yes it looks are not great but it has been the most reliable car we have owned and will probably go on to do another 180k miles but we want something more upto date. Sold that recently and bought a new shape one instead and thats even better, cant go wrong. Thing that put me off was all the turbo, injector and manifold issues. My sister had 2 injectors go down on her 530d and that was a fortune to put right. My mate has a e36 and it suffers from rust on the body but is a w reg. Did they put this right later on? I looked at the newer shape in hope the issues have been sorted but the 330d was to much in price but the boot seems quite small when i had a look at one in a car park (2006 i think) and i have two fairly large dobermans and such is the only reason we have an estate. Have you got the 3.0d?
dangerous brain
What about something like this http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/2317415.htm Obviously auto's are available.
Graham S
There is a kit that sorts out some issues with the 3.0d BMW engine.. Had to fit one the other day funnily enough, What it does I don't know but the customer had loads of info about some flaps at the bottom of the inlet manifold that snap then get sucked into the engine. Had to remove the manifold then unbolt them and fit blanks! Didn't drive any different though.. As for the Mercs I don't know what the year is for rust issues but my bosses E-class 320CDI is totally rotten.. Front wings, rear arches, boot, bonnet, A pillar, the lot. His is a 04 plate with 40k miles on it, had a 55 plate in last week that was well on its way too! Oh, the Volvo V50/S50/40 is a ford focus! Have you got the 3.0d? 3 litre D yes, I think the injector problem was on the earlier E46 model, never that issue with my old one or the new one I have now. If it's to small how about the 5 Series, they are cheaper than the same age 3 series.

Have you got the 3.0d? I'm with Paul on this, IMO the 330d is probably the best all round car money can buy right now. It may have its issues, but what car doesn't? The VAG cars suffer there own problems (glow plugs seem to be a very regular occurence) and from what i've seen, the turbos seem to be a weak point, especially on remapped cars. Mercs have loads of issues, electrics seem to be a common problem (I know of 3 Newish E class cars, that have been through 6 instrument displays between them!) The 3 series doesn't have a massive boot, but it's still practical, and drives like a sports car, while returning 40mpg. If you want the bigger boot, the E39 5 series is fantastic, though not quite as sharp a drivers car as the E46 or E90 3 series. IMO the E39 530d is one of THE great cars.
