Swampy442
How do you measure it, is there a limit? My brothers Aristo has some odd things going on in the rear suspension department, I checked the bushes but the all have some play, the upper rear arms especially have alot of lateral play. So what is too much play?

TTRickeh
There should be no play at all.
Swampy442
So, in a rubber bush there shoud be no play at all? Id expect a bit because its rubber...
Graham S
Not sure there is a definative answer to that.. The only way to get an exact answer may be to get in touch with Toyota/Lexus and see if they will tell you from their technical data.. Depending on what sort of bush it is and where as to what i'd say is excessive or not. You should in theory not be able to pull on something and make it move but lever bar, maybe, yes. How much movement we talking about? An easier test is to compare it to the other side and see what that is like.. But whatever, i'd say no more than 2-3mm but that is a wild guess not knowing what arm/bush is on, if that makes sense.

Thats my problem, depends on the force you apply etc. They all look in reasonable condition, no splits etc and no play using your hands but something is definately up. TTRickeh
How is it you're testing for play? If you've got the car jacked up and wiggle the wheel, none of the arms should move at all IMO, pretty sure you'd get an advisory or fail in your MOT if they did, I certainly have anyway. Swampy442
Well I was using a pair of long nose pliers as I had no pry bar or anything to hand, but both top arms had a noticable amount of play
Animal
Dare I google WTF that means!! Desquamate, to shed or peel the outer layers of skin. Yeah, like when you go all wrinkly after being in the bath too long.
movistar
There shouldn't be any play at all, flex yes(unless you have uprated bushes like the neoprene one's), but no play. Remember the small amount of play you feel when checking for play will be massive in what you feel through the suspension when driving, especially if it affects camber, caster or toe. dave finch
if you got that much play id replace them or just poly bush the whole car will definatly make it handle better what ever you do
kill1308
if you got that much play id replace them or just poly bush the whole car will definatly make it handle better what ever you do I think quite a few people here have had problems with the Poly bush kits (I could be wrong though). If they need replacing I'd go with OEM parts.
AndrewOW
One of my rear bushes needs replacing, and I'd prefer OEM parts, but do Toyota still sell them?
Dnk
For the main wishbones as far as im aware you can only buy the complete unit from Toyota, from what i've read the bush kits don't appear to last very long where as the o/e arms are good for over 100,000 miles, well my uk's were but ofcourse this could vary from car to car. The biggest downside is their not cheap, i have replaced all mine with new o/e and the car after a full geo at Centre Gravity drives very nicely, even on silly big 19's
Swampy442
He cant afford/justify OEM arms, dont the upper rears chime in at 300 quid each or something? The cars only worth 400. But cheers for the (sensible) replies
ManwithSupra
I think quite a few people here have had problems with the Poly bush kits (I could be wrong though). If they need replacing I'd go with OEM parts. I havent had any trouble with my R2 bushes they have been on the car for around 2 years now and still look new Not sure about the other brands though. If they do fail then i will just upgrade/replace them with new Ikeya formula arms

Chris Wilson
If these are the same as MKIV Supra rear upper arms they are spherical bearings with rubber water seals, and should have NO play in them. If there is play then rear wheel steer and torque steer will be apparent, plus maybe some knocking noises.
