CJ
So, can someone please explain to me why we paid 1.85m to one of the richest organisations in the world to part fund the visit? http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-12351583

adnanshah247
because we allow this country to ass rape us as much as it likes and we quietly fit the bills.
Charlotte
"Many people will be as surprised as we were to discover that UK aid money was used to fund the Pope's visit last year," he said. Did they not read any number of the billion news articles at the time which clearly stated we were in part funding the trip?

Not being in the country I missed those. If I had seen that then I would have posted sooner. So, once again, why were we funding a religious visit by the head of one of the richest organisations in the world? That's just crazy. As above, we get raped by the government again and again and no one fights them as nothing would come of it. Just look at the student riots, they showed themselves to be trouble makers and no good came of it.
Charlotte
That wasn't aimed at you CJ just the article. The news was absolutely saturated at the time with talk of the UK funding the trip - in the run up to him being in the country and afterwards. http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/scottish-news/2010/02/14/exclusive-20-00-sign-petition-demanding-pope-funds-uk-visit-86908-22042241/ - February last year http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/8692756.stm - May http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2010/jul/05/popes-uk-visit-cost-12m - July I have no idea myself because I just avoided all of it after a while. CJ
It's just more lazy journalism. I would agree if it were regurgitating the old stories but I think this one was more to due from where the funding came from rather than the actual funding itself. johnny g
I bet when you tot up what people spent to see him, local economy figures, hotels, guest houses, local pubs/restaurants, etc. The country is better off for it.

Was there a massive influx of tourists from outside the UK? Or is that just from those within the UK?

CJ
Those in the UK travelled. I know 3 ejits who did! But wouldn't that (at least to a certain extent) just be moving money around? And, even if they did spend lots more elsewhere, doesn't that then equate to the taxpayer paying for a limited amount of other tax payers to benefit - if you get my drift

CJ
I have just found this which in part explains why we had to foot some of the bill. I don't know how accurate it is though. "Pope John Paul II visited England and Wales in 1982 on a so-called pastoral visit, which essentially means the Vatican paid his way. That was a religious mission, funded by the Catholic Church. This time, Benedict is coming to Britain supposedly on state business, as head of the independent country of Vatican City -- meaning the British taxpayer will foot part of the bill for his security and hotels, as it does when President Barack Obama or any other head of state comes to town". Money from one pot, goes to another, goes elswhere. Isn't that all it ever is? I think this is just the media sensationalising events. Abz
His visit cost £10 million over 4 days?!? Even Mariah Carey doesn't even spend that much and she has 200 people employed just to put her face on!

TubbyTwo
good old religion again, they clearly dont need part funding to visit the UK, unless its going into the compensation/silence pot for all the fiddle victims.
