IanK
Didn't get home till gone 3:00 this morning as my Supra broke down last night. I've got a feeling its only the fuel pump. Ive only had the car 3 days after it being imported and converted etc. Its BPU but i suspect it was a standard pump, it did make a very high pitched fairly loud hum on 2-3 10 minute periods which i only noticed when pulling up. Next time it started it was back to its normal lower pitched hum. The engine just stopped when crusing about 20 ish approaching a roundabout, on which i had to park! The starter motor turns over but i cant hear any hum from the pump at the rear, should the pump be running at this point? Can someone please tell be if i should able to hear it when turning over, if so then it definately looks like its the pump and ill order one today. JustGav
I would put a walbro in anyway as a safety precaution, they aren't overly expensive around the 100 mark and at least you can be sure you have got a good pump. Gav
IanK
Cheers Gav. Ive ordered a Walbro so ill fit that either tomorrow or Saturday. If its not the fuel pump and theres no power to it, what else should i check & where/how? Fuse, relay etc? Cheers
Guest chiefvinso
Is this something you can do yourself and is a basic swap? I am pretty competent mechanically but have never dealt with a fuel pump. Are they easy to get to? This will be the first thing I do on delivery of my car but if I can fit it then I would rather do it. Cheers
IanK
Seems easy enough: http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?t=38656&highlight=fuel+pump

Ian C
You can short pins +B and FP in the diagnostics port (with the ignition off) and then turn the ignition on (but don't start the engine) and it'll activate the fuel pump. Great for testing fuel flow, if the pump is working, and setting your static fuel pressure. If the pump doesn't spin up, it's multimeter time - I'll cross that bridge with you if we have to -Ian
IanK
Thanks Ian, that sounds great. Where is the diagnostics port & is there a picture showing the pins somewhere?
Ian C
Diagnostic port is on the side of the intake manifold, have a look here for a piccy. The pinouts are labelled on the underside of the diag port lid -Ian
IanK
Thanks Ian, ill print all those pictures out, very usefull. Assuming i fit the walbro pump saturday and everythings start up fine, will the standard FPR be ok with the bigger pump?

IanK
Good stuff. Fingers crossed it's just the pump then. Thanks for the help everyone, ill post up the results of fitting the pump saturday.
IanK
Ordered a walbro pump from one of the traders (not gonna say who as it may be the delivery company's fault) but it still hasn't arrived! Anyway, over the weekend I tried bridging the pins on the diagnostics port (thanks for the info IanC) and i turned the ignition on... ... i heard a couple of relays click but no fuel pump. So it looks like it will be a simple case of fitting the new one, when it arrives.
Steve
Sorry for the but when changing the pump to the walbro, i noticed that the plug is different, so obviously you have to cut the wires and then join them on to the old plug using the crimps supplied. Do these joints need to be insulated in anyway. If so with what? Thanks
IanK
I always heavily insulate any connection i make & seeing as this ones near fuel lines i would say a definite yes to be safe. *UPDATE* My pumps just arrived!
Steve
But with what?
IanK
Black insulating tape.
Steve
But that tape would come undone if petrol gets on it!! Thats what i have found in the past anyway. Any other ideas?

Steve
So the crimp bits will be ok. Just not sure about the black tape. As above i thought petrol would make it come unstuck. Do they need to be insulated?
IanK
How about tightly wraping a terminal block in black tape and use a couple of cable ties to stop it coming un-done?

IanK
I dont know, anyone else? Really need a definative answer on this as im not going to put my fuel pump back poorly insulated. Someone must know, please help!
IanK
Now i've had time to check everything, ive found that one of the 2nd EFI 30amp fuse was blown, put in a new fuse and it didn't blow but no fuel pump still. I changed the fuel pump to a walbro anway as it will need doing at some point but still no joy. Tested the old pump on a 12 transformer and that still works. So what next? Multimeter ready... ...Calling IanC
