Dale B
Got the dreaded "click" on key turn this morning. Is the solenoid replaceable or do I have to buy a complete starter motor?
merckx
You can also get the dreaded click if your battery is dead, do the electric windows go up and down okay? You shouldn't have to buy the whole starter motor, you can normally get them refurbished.
Gaz Walker
Try the battery first Dale, I've only heard of one starter motor going on a Supra before. Depends what sort of click it was! Gaz.
Aerotop Dave
Talk to Chris Wilson. A new one is ~£260, Chris does a refurb for ~£60. Keep trying it though - mine was dodgy for about 6 months. Sometimes it would suddenly catch on the 14th or 15th turn!

Chris Wilson
If you want I can either refurb it if you fetch the car, or post the starter and I'll turn it around and post back next day.
Maxx
Check the battery if its okay then do a refurb on the starter, if you do a search you'll find quite a bit on this. Refurbed mine about 12 months ago, the hardest part was getting the starter out of the car and back in again (this maybe due to having a UK TT Auto) there is very little room to work. I'd have Chris W do it if you don't want the hassle. If you decide to do it yourself you'll need BOTH the following parts from Toyota: Starter Kit #28226-74070 and Starter Kit #28226-22050 About £20 if I remember correctly. Be warned if it's a UK auto (not sure about manual) the starter bolts are a complete nightmare to get to. Goodluck
Lazarus
Dale, if you've got the facilities, ie ability to get good access to the underside of the car at the front, I'd buy the solenoid repair parts from Toyota and do the job yourself. The parts are cheap and It shouldn't take more than a day (read that as a lazy day with plenty of tea breaks ). As said above, the only difficult bit is the access to the starter to remove/refit. Kopite
i had that too Dale, was just the battery
Dale B
It started ok after about 2-3 attempts. The battery seems ok, everything else electric works fine so my first thought was starter solenoid.
Maxx
Thats exactly what mine did, it's definately worn contacts in the starter solenoid, be warned it took me and a buddy almost two hours to put the top bolt back on my UK TT Auto, I think you'll find this isn't the case with J-spec but I note your's is a UK right? He had to put the spanner on the nut for the engine bay and I had to turn it from under the car! If you need part number for the solenoid repair see my earlier reply for the bits you'll need. QSC
Sounds exactly like mine Dale - here's another one for Gaz's list, cause my starter solenoid was definitely faulty, and on a low mileage car too. I had a local auto-electrical place recondition it for £60. Been perfect ever since
Dale B
Booked into Autoelectrics tomorrow £50 to refurb the solenoid ... bonus. Thanks for the offer Chris, this will be easier / closer
