RedM
In the US you can, if I remember correctly, turn right to go with the traffic if the lights are red. How about being able to turn left at a red light in this country? Might help to ease congestion. Thoughts?
Whitesupraboy2
crashes alot of crashes! it hard to introduce something new. when i was working in Jersey the amount of English holiday makers who didnt understand a Filter roundabout was crazy! Bobbeh
In the US its only at some junctions and not at peak times either. Problem with trying that here is there are too many selfish road users as there are, there'd be chaos
eldudereno
Sometimes it can be a little tricky where the roads and junction aren't too wide and a big lorry needs more room to swing round. This can only be achieved if all the other traffic is stationary behind the appropriate white lines.
michael
Another thing that impressed me when I drove in the US was the polite way people did box junctions, everyone took it in turns based on when they got there, in a month of driving nobody pushed in. Holly
With a variation, it can work quite well; in South Africa (where they also drive on the left), at most traffic lights (our S.African friends call them 'robots' - bless!), they have a left hand feeder / slip road where you have to give way, but can proceed if it's clear. RedM
Yeah, I noticed that box junction thing too. Maybe they don't push in out of fear of getting shot. One thing I couldn't handle was actually having to stop at stop signs even when there was no-one around. Sneaky cops. Learnt not to do a Californian Crawl. Also got pulled doing 77 in a 55 zone. Made the cop laugh and he let me go with a $30 dollar fine. Even got my pic taken with him.
Guest chiefvinso
I lived in chicago for 3 years and the turning at red lights was great (both left and right - left on one way streets), difference with this country is that our roads are smaller and have more bends in them. In Chicago and the rest of the states you have so much space that you can clearly see that its clear to turn on red unless it stated no turn on red. Almost gone through red lights here since moving back 6 months ago!
J4CK50N
I loved driving in America, and too found the courtesy of other road users excellent! 1st time I got to a box junction wondered what the hell happened, but soon sussed it out! Dont think the left turn at traffic lights would work, In my experience you cant see as much in UK and the USA junctions - accidents waiting to happen!!! Guest chiefvinso
I remember my first time at a 4 way stop in a rental car so I hadnt taken my driving test over there - I happened to be there while a cop car was there who waved me to go, I was so confussed. After speaking to friends they explained that its a case of who gets to the stop sign first and its then based on curtousy. In the Chicago it could get hectic as some people would jump their turn but probably just cos they hadnt judged who out of the 4 and ones behind the others were there first. It needed a little bit more aggression.
