magicmatty
Recently (Few weeks ago) I found reference to Limewire around here, and having had 100% NO luck trying to use Kazaa, I looked it up... Found it, installed it and have been using it since (not a huge amount). With recent radio and news reports of people being billed HUGE amounts for downloads (£4K+) ...I wondered if anyone knew enough about it on here to know whats ok (relatively speaking) 1. I only download occasional music tracks and pics, software etc... 2. I remove EVERYTHING from my shared folder- (defeats the point a little!!) Dont know if any of this make a blind bit of difference but i heard only "big" users are getting done, also those who keep everything in their shared folder are getting caught, also only those "sharing" can be done, if your not "sharing" anything out, then your OK....?????*****???? Looking for a little help on the matter. Im not overly concerned but the "boss" keps moaning about it and I thought others may use some thoughts too. Jake
Has anyone in this country actually been to court for downloading via P2P? When did this happen?

Jake
25 people have been done for £50k in total Are you sure? They (the BMI or whoever) usually drop the case at the last minute because they're scared they might lose. In the past they have always made a last minute deal with the person they were supposed to be suing so that the person doesn't have to appear in court as long as he pretends that he's had to pay them a huge out of court settlement. I'll be very interested (and concerned) if you can show me a case that has actually gone to court in this country.
Kopite
what word apparently? it's funny you mentioned it jake, was readin in the news today about a mum who's facing jail as her daughter who's 14 downloaded over 1000 tracks. they gave her mum (because the kid's under 16) a £4000 fine and said that if she doesn't pay it within a few months (forgot how many), then she's facin jail time. it was from that article that it mentioned 25 people have paid already. EDIT: here's the article, might of read it wrong as i only speed read it before LINK
Jake
it's funny you mentioned it jake, was readin in the news today about a mum who's facing jail as her daughter who's 14 downloaded over 1000 tracks. Surely she's only facing jail if : she refuses to hand over £2500 to the BPI and choses to go to court instead. she then loses the case and gets fined she then doesn't pay the fine From what I can make out, she has not been to court yet. She's not even been summonsed. There is no court date booked. There's just a threat of court action. they gave her mum (because the kid's under 16) a £4000 fine and said that if she doesn't pay it within a few months (forgot how many), then she's facin jail time. I think the "they" in that statement is the BPI not a court of law. it was from that article that it mentioned 25 people have paid already. They may have paid (or just agreed to publicly say they have paid) but they haven't been to court. EDIT: here's the article, might of read it wrong as i only speed read it before LINK Have a read when you get time, Ro. I can't see anywhere in the article where it says there has been a court case. I think it's pretty bad of the BBC and others giving out such misleading information. They all make it sound like people have already been convicted but if you read the articles careful it doesn't say that at all. I've just found this Guardian article which makes things a little clearer.
magicmatty
Seems like a lot of misleading or inaccuracies????? Not sure of the details but wondered if any "techs" knew any details about the rights and wrongs of the "sharing" thing...Appears you can get done for downloading as well as sharing out or making available? Kopite
ah yeah Jake the guardian one's a bit clearer. i never use limewire though
Jake
Appears you can get done for downloading as well as sharing out or making available? It might be possible but it has not happened to one single person in the UK yet. The chances of YOU getting nicked are so small they aren't worth considering. You literally have a better chance of winning the lottery. The only people who have been even threatened with court action are *major* downloaders. This topic has come up before actually. far
how do they trace you Jake? I mean how can they tell who is on the other end of Limewire and their home address etc? Doesnt using programmes like protowall along with blocklist manager stop these people from seeing you ?
