Dazzi
The other day i was driving the car pretty hard and it started making a ticking noise from the front of the gearbox/back of the engine. You can hear it while the cars ticking over and driving, also it gets louder when you dip the clutch. Yesterday there was a loud scraping noise like something rotating and then it went. Now the gearbox has a slight shake when ticking over and moving off. Has the input shaft bearing gone maybe or something on the flywheel? I haven't heard anything like this before so its been quite hard for me to diagnose the problem lol Edit this is a W58 box
shima60
Oh dear that does not sound good. Could it be a simple release bearing? someone might be able to tell you a bit more but that's defo the first thing i'd be checking.
Chris Wilson
Sounds like something's happened to the clutch, possibly the plate is falling aprt. I would say it'll be a `box out job to find the cause and effect a fix
dr_jekyll
my old w58 started doing that. i also thaught it was comeing from inside the bell housing, i changed the clutch , thrust baring and pilot baring. put it all back togetrher and it was still the same , so back off and delved into the box itself turned out the be the barings in the centre plate of the box Edited January 24, 2011 by dr_jekyll (see edit history)
Dazzi
Still did that even on tick over? the gear box isnt turnin though. I asked a few mechanics one seems to think its a misfire the other thinks the engines dropped a bearing or something on the crank lol
dr_jekyll
when its ticking over are you on the clutch? mine did it on tickover when in nutral but stoped when i pressed the clutch.
Dazzi
does it all the time mate, clutch in, out, in neutral, in gear, moving along etc
dr_jekyll
aww. pilot baring maybee?
Dazzi
Didnt realise a pilot bearing could make the noise it did and shake the engine so bad, after all it just moves in and out?.. lol
Chris Wilson
A pilot bearing just goes round a nd round, it's fixed in the end of the crankdhaft. It only goes round when the clutch is depressed enough to free it. With the clutch pedal "up" it doesn't even turn. Sounds more engine related to me, a misfire probably. Try pulling each injector, coil pack or plug lead off in turn and see if there's a dead cylinder.
Dazzi
Cheers for the responce Chris. Anyway tried what you mentioned and there are no cylinders dead so im guessing its something in the crank? maybe a bearing? Good excuse for a TT now i think
dr_jekyll
could be the dreaded crank walk
