jackso11
Is it a bad idea for any reason to spray the viscous fan? Its looking a bit grubby and I want it clean, but it won't clean up that good so I thought about spraying it....

Rob_Mitchell
i have heard that spraying it can upset the balance of things, keron had that problem anyway as i was going to do mine a while ago
keron
yep they are balanced. so if you paint it, it can inbalance them...(if you put too much paint in one area etc...if its a light coat without the clear coat, you may get away with it.. Scott
Hammerite smooth spray to the rescue.
Dnk
I'd have thought you really would have to be pretty crap at spraying to put enough on in one spot to imbalance the fan, if even coats are applied i can't see it being a problem, if you painted with a brush then maybe. shima60
Save the money on spray and ditch the fan. Replace it with a electric
jackso11
I heard the Viscous fans are better than the electric, but the electric are needed to save space for some people. That not true?
shima60
Not sure on the cooling side of things i think it depends on the electric fan. I do know that they take up power from the engine to spin though. Wonder if anyone has done a comparison on power vs cooling on an electric vs Viscous

Really? Ive never seen one that looks like its balanced. I'd have thought you really would have to be pretty crap at spraying to put enough on in one spot to imbalance the fan. Thats what I thought. Wonder if anyone has done a comparison on power vs cooling on an electric vs Viscous The viscous fan saps power in the form of parasitic loss but where does the power for the electric fans come from Theres lots of figures for the efficiency of the stock fan but alot of people run electric fans and dont have cooling issues. jevansio
The electric ones would have to be less efficient (measuring a like for like fan performance) by nature of them converting mechanical engine power into electricty then back to mechanical, vs the stock fan being purely mechanically driven. I bought mine for pure cosmetic reasons,

jackso11
I would guess they are too expensive unless they come through you Nic. When you start trading again I have a list of things I want from you that are stupidly priced through Toyota UK! Like a new handbrake for one. TLicense
Mine looked a bit grubby so I just removed it and gave it a good smashing with some brake cleaner. Soon came up like new. jackso11
Might do that. I have a new viscous coupling to fit so will have the fan off anyway....I think.....not looked yet as I sorted my overheating problem with a heater matrix so vicous coupling wasn't the problme
Scott
I took mine out today and painted it Before painting it I gave it a right good going over with erm... jet fuel... and it came up like new
