mr lover
I didn't realise how much gold was worth at the moment. To cut a long story short, couple of days ago my wife broke a bracelet and the jeweller wanted £80 to fix it but also told her it was worth £300 + as scrap. So I suggested she sorted out the jewellery that she and I have not worn, used or has been broken and in her jewellery box for years. Today she rang me to say that there was, 172g of 9ct gold and 69g of 18ct gold worth around the £3k mark I knew I should have taken it to be valued

ozz
Do your research if you use one of those cash for gold type sites, I've heard a number of bad comments - stuff going missing etc. One of my sites is a precious metals refinery, gold is actually one of the least valuable but the prices of metals is recovering well across the board. Guigsy
cash for gold and all the other lot were on watchdog the other week. took a load of things to be valued (scrap value). Then sent them to cash for gold and got a tiny faction of the actual value. it wasnt illegal ether. As they are just offering you a price not a valuation they can offer whatever they like. even if its not remotely close to the real value. stevie_b
I watch that, I couldn't believe it was legal to offer whatever you wanted? It would have to be legal though. Assuming a piece of jewellery is pure gold (which it might not be), it can be weighed and you could be given a price based on the price of gold that day. However that wouldn't allow any overheads, profit margin or protection against the gold price falling short-term for the companies that offer the service. Rob
I watch that, I couldn't believe it was legal to offer whatever you wanted? That was one of the first things our tutor taught us in Contract Law. Its all about offer and acceptance, not value. I could offer my car for sale for £50,000 and say some rich old lady comes along and buys it for her son. It may be morally wrong but there's no legal barrier. I really wish that would happen too, maybe she'd be quite hot, like Liz Taylor in her 50's. I may have wandered off topic here.

Jord
Yeh the cash for gold things offer nowhere near as much as the gold is actually worth. I don't even know where all of these came from, they seemed to pop up overnight. 3k spare cash from unused and broken jewelry is pretty sweet though! penguin
keep hold of it - once the $ is made to collapse in a few years gold will be worth a lot more.

They seem to target those who are at home during the day, and reel them in by splashing £££ signs all over the TV screen.
JustGav
I watch that, I couldn't believe it was legal to offer whatever you wanted? Why wouldn't it be legal... they are just a company offering to buy a product, they offer what they want, and you have the choice of accepting or not... Okay, they are a bunch of scam merchants, but can't see why it would be illegal.
probrox
£3,100 if you go to Tesco, and clubcard points too! Seems to be a bit more than some of the Jewellers from what I can see. Only until the end of January though. https://www.tescogoldexchange.com/
