Windows for the house

Hobgoblin

Recommended Posts

Hi all.

Our house is about 30 years old, and most of the windows are the oe ones.

So we are thinking of having them replaced, and wondering if anyone here has experience to share, regarding the pros and cons of different suppliers.

We had a guy from Everest round yesterday, and he wanted over 7k for 6 windows, which does sound a bit daft to me (especially as I am car shopping at the same time!)

Cheers

Hi, just been down this route myself, I wouldnt mind betting that Everest will come back to you in a few days and say they are doing a promo in your area and can do it for less. Then if you still hold out they will come back to you and say that the surveyor got the figures wrong and they drop again. This is what they did to us at least. I cant be bothered with all that nonsense, as far as I am concerned if they come to quote they should be quoting their best figure first time, not trying it on.

I just had my BIG front bay done following some horrendous building works and my builder found a local guy who came in and instead of ripping out all the sash boxes in the normal way meaning I would be left with loads of making good, used a special technique that retained all the original victorian archtrave feartures. Its a big bay and ended up costing me £1900 whereas Everest quoted me £2500 a few years ago for a single large window, smaller than all of the three that make up the bay.

One other thing though, on my upstairs ones I had replaced during the first phase of the building work, they fitted "trickle vents" which are part of the current building regs, on the downstairs bay, I asked them not to fit them as imo they look ugly and degrade the sound insulation that for me was the biggest plus point in going to UPVC. All it means is that if I want to sell in the future and get the FENSA certificate for the bay windows, I have to pay for the vents to be added, but have no intention of moving.
