Decided to re-wire most of the audio install in the boot. It was a complete mess of wires underneath the boxes. Unfortunately (less embarassing for me) I don't have any "before" pictures, but you can trust me that it looked an absolute state.

I also got rid of the capacitor that I had in place as I think it was draining current from my battery, useless piece of junk regardless so it's gone.

First I wiped out the spaghetti, boot plastics and inserts. I then bought some nice spanking new cable and a couple of distribution blocks. I cut all the cable to length then tie wrapped it together to keep it neat-ish. I then worked the cable around the back quarter of the boot and into position for the fast plugs. I then wired up the fast plugs in each of the 3 positions required (for when the amps are in place). Excuse the dirty boot and grubby bits and bobs, I won't be cleaning until everything is final :)

attachment.php?attachmentid=125931&stc=1&d=1295904027

I then put the LHS insert in place and checked the lengths etc.

attachment.php?attachmentid=125932&stc=1&d=1295904027

Then it was time for the rest of the inserts, the board and fitting the carpet in place.

attachment.php?attachmentid=125935&stc=1&d=1295904027

And then onto the test fitting. First the subs go in and get pushed right to the back, as I was test fitting I didn't bother wiring them in but each speaker has bullet connectors for quick release. The amp rack then sits on top of the subs/speakers while everything gets plugged in and then it gets slotted into space.

attachment.php?attachmentid=125938&stc=1&d=1295904027

All that is left to do is extend the speaker wires from the components, as due to tidying the wires away this has left them short, and giving everything a damn good clean.

Next on the list is replacing the shoddy looking tie wraps for some nice black shrink wrap :D

I've been working my bum off the last couple of days. The funny thing is that it doesn't look like I have done much.

I finished off all the wiring for the boot install, including heat shrinking all of the cables. They all run in behind the boot panels. The only cable missing is the one for the sub but I need to get some heavier speaker wire to do that.

3 power cables

3 earth cables

3 remote cables

4 sets of RCA cable

6 sets of speaker cable (sub will make 7)

After that I moved back to the engine bay to get that finished off and put back together...

Finished off the install tonight. I layed in the subwoofer cable and I also sorted out all the amp input wires with new, shrinkwrapped, ones :D

Not quite finished in the boot yet though as I finally got around to sorting out my Jspec rear lights. Did the fog light mod as per the fantastic guide from pixlefill and got it all up and running. All that is left is to finish the mounting of the lights, relays etc and to transfer over the C-West covers (that should be fun).

I'm wondering whether or not to do the clear indicator mod or not, it isn't REALLY visible with the covers on so may be pointless. I will see how I feel.

Arghhh, I'm running out of things to do :D

Crossed off another niggling job over the last few days.

When I picked the car up it had UK spec rear lights. I can understand the reasoning for doing this, fog light mod is a SCOOSH with UKs, but I always wanted the twin burner look that you get with the Jspecs. A fair while back I picked up a set of rear lights and I finally got round to sorting them out.

The first thing I did was follow this guide to get the fog lights up and running. I then set about taking off my cwest light covers, which ended in one of them being cracked :(

I was left with a quandary..... do I live with the crack, buy new covers or do I just go without?

I decided on neither and bought a tin of tinting spray. The lights aren't PERFECT yet but they already look as good as they did with the covers on, without the added bulk, and with a little elbow grease they will be spot on IMO.

  • 3 weeks later...

Had the whole day to spend on my Supra today so got a few niggling jobs finished. It's amazing how much time the small jobs can take.

First I swapped over the steering wheel....

I got a hold of a Toyota Celica Steering wheel so I set about removing my Lexus one. I love both wheels so I honestly wasn't sure which one to keep, I ended up letting another member decide for me lol. I don't have any pics on the car as I wanted to crack on with the other jobs that needed doing.

Old:

attachment.php?attachmentid=127233&stc=1&d=1298150185

Both:

attachment.php?attachmentid=127234&stc=1&d=1298150185

New:

attachment.php?attachmentid=127235&stc=1&d=1298150185

Once that was done it was time to finalise my Hecklers Patented Redline Conversion. Re-wired it and fitted it in nicely. No pics of this as it just looks like stock, I will do a video at some point though. For now here is a demo from AndyT's car. Obvious difference is that mine is facelift and another difference with mine is I have my whole cluster changing colour. For some reason with the facelift you can't select a "Redline" with the conversion, the maximum is around 4700RPM so I have set mine just above 4k for the 2nd turbo rush :D

From there I fitted my rear lights. When I got the car it had UK spec lights, for a couple of reasons. 1 it is VERY easy to do the fog light mod with these and 2 with it being a black car I think the last owner opted for the black inserts. From the beginning I always wanted the afterburner look so using Pixlefills fantastic guide I set about fitting the fog light mod, I did this a while back and I also tinted my rear lights so it was time to fit them. Previously I had Cwest covers but after cracking one while removing, I decided it was time for the tint to come into action. I don't have any pics on the car but I have a couple of them before fitting...

attachment.php?attachmentid=127238&stc=1&d=1298150185

I had a little problem with the fog light mod and after lots of cursing, the dash being pulled apart and various other checks I found that my switch seems to be a bit fooked. Even with the engine running and supplying 14v the switch is sapping up some of the voltage meaning that the Relays in the rear aren't getting activated. According to my multimeter it is seeing 12.2v so it SHOULD work, but it doesn't. New switch with blue LED on order.

From there it was onto my stereo. It has annoyed me for YEARS that I didn't have the correct size screws to mount the stereo onto the bracket. I found a self tapper that seemed to do the job and headed down to the hardware store to get some pan head self tappers of the same size. I then cut them down to size and fitted them to my stereo, finally I am satisfied that it is being held in securely. Again, no pictures as it's all hidden.

The last little job I done was change out the rear markers. When I fitted my tinted rear markers, the only colour bulbs I had were amber (chrome ones), finally got round to fitting red ones lol. Easy job, but crossed off the list none the less.

I will take lots of pics of the various bits and bobs done soon :)

I'm gonna have a look into this....

I did try running a 30k ohm resistor in parallel (to drop the resistance to 10k) but it made no difference bud. I wasn't sure exactly which resistor you were referring to (as there are 3 around the pot) so I just held the resistor against the legs which is clearly not ideal lol. I would guess that the range in my car would be 0 revs to 4700 revs if that's any help.

On another note, my spare pots came today so I'll pop them in the post with the boards for you. Hopefully they will be the right ones :D

Cheers

I have now started to plan ahead for my single conversion.

I have fallen into the trap of not actually spending any time to enjoy my car as it is. I keep fettling with things, upgrading things, changing things, etc etc etc the list is endless. This has meant that my car has spent FAR more time in my garage, on axle stands or in spray booths getting things done than it has on the road being driven. I've decided that other than a few easy tweaks (a bit of paint here, a bolt on there) I won't be doing anything to my car until it comes off road for winter, this is when the fun will REALLY begin, and I am just goin to enjoy the car as it is... taking myself to some meets and generally just enjoying the car as I have always meant to.

Once Winter comes it will be coming off the road completely until it is ready to make its way down south for a visit to Lee and Ryan. I haven't decided exactly how far I will be taking the install on my own. I have been reading through the service manuals and looking at the bits I want to refresh and change before going ahead with the Single install. Whether I will have the time and the space to do the things I want to do will remain to be seen. Regardless though they will be getting done, if not by me then it will just be added to the list for Lee when he can fit me in :D

The list as it stands at the moment:

Brakes - Full refurb including new pistons/seals

Valve Stem Seals - Head off change.

Springs and Retainers - Upgrades in preperation for new cams (done at the same time as above)

New Crank Pulley Wheel & Bolt

New Timing belt

New Aux belt

New Cam Seals

New Rear Crank Seal

ASI Radiator Fitted

Clutch - Southbend Organic Plate Clutch to be fitted in prep for single

Full Service - New Colder plugs, thinner engine oil along with all fluids changed.

Fuel Pump - Bosch fuel Pump with In-Tank fitting

Gauges - Oil Temp/Oil Pressure in one gauge fitted in prep for single.

Engine Bay - Some painting and sprucing up while everything is out.

Once all that is done it will be onto the actual single install fitting..... fun fun fun :D

I may be going slightly mad as I'm actually looking forward to getting stuck right into this.

Some little additions over the past couple of weeks.

Got myself an ARP Cooling Panel thing. Painted it gloss black to go with the rest of the engine bay. This turned out to be a nightmare of a job as the paint kept on reacting. Got there eventually but I think I went through enough paint to do a car. Turned out the paint I was using didn't like being multi-coated. Excuse the finger prints, I just fitted it lol.

attachment.php?attachmentid=133016&stc=1&d=1305827058

Next I got myself a set of facelift rear lights, although you wouldn't be able to tell :innocent:

attachment.php?attachmentid=133018&stc=1&d=1305827058

I sorted out the decals on my boot build too, I always regretted going with silver so I changed them to red.

attachment.php?attachmentid=133009&stc=1&d=1305827058

Next on the list was fitting the TRD centre badge onto my Celica wheel.

attachment.php?attachmentid=133010&stc=1&d=1305827058

Last but not least was the Sard Trigger boost controller that I bought. Slots in lovely to the right hand side airvent. I also got some nice plugs to cap off the ends of the unused vac lines.

The car officially went off the road yesterday so I've jumped right in and got cracking.

This is the last couple of pictures before I started....

attachment.php?attachmentid=137027&stc=1&d=1312914758

And this is it now. As you can see I had a slight coolant leak at one point :D

attachment.php?attachmentid=137028&stc=1&d=1312914758

I also recieved my Valve Keeper tool today so got cracking on the spare head. Brian Crower springs & retainers now fitted along with the ferrea valve stem seals that were already fitted in place. It's amazing the difference having the right tools makes. Before the tool arrived I only managed to get 2 fitted. I spent 4 hours trying to get them fitted, I was seriously cracking up. Today armed with the proper snapon kit I did the other 22 in about 30 mins.

attachment.php?attachmentid=137029&stc=1&d=1312914758

Looking forward to cracking on :D
