Scott
I decided it was time for me to do a build thread. My car has undergone quite a change in the 3 years I have owned it. Other than a few tweaks here and there, and the addition of a single turbo kit, the car is IMO finished. Although no doubt I will always find something to change. This is how she started off life with me: Of course I hadn’t had the car 2 mins before deciding on the things I wanted to change so off I went in the pursuit of perfection. Ice Install: First up was the stereo. I already had a CarPC setup so that was going in along with a couple of amps, subs and some new speakers all round. CarPC Spec: 2ghz Processor, built into the board 1gb DDR2 PC4200 Ram Onboard Graphics 64mb shared Onboard sound 120gb SATA HDD 5400 laptop 160W M2-ATX Smart Power Supply Built in Bluetooth Pioneer DVD-RW Sirf III GPS Reciever 3G PCMCIA Card Boot: 2000w Lanzar 4ch amp (250w RMS per channel) With remote bass boost 600w Boschman Amp (Was replaced with a 1000w Lanzar Amp) 2x 12" Sonly Xplod Subs 380w RMS each 1.6 farad Powercap 20GB Ipod Up Front: Lilliput 7" Motorized Touchscreen VGA monitor Sony DVD Headunit MEX-R1 Vibe Slick 60's 80w RMS front & rear Dump Valve I then decided I wanted my Supra to sound like a bus so I went with the SSQV2 HKS blow off valve. Great bit of kit, all that it needs is the purple insert to make it sound less gay. HID Lights & Alarm Next was a lovely set of HID lights and a new alarm system. I still maintain that HIDs are one of the best mods you can do on a Supra. The stock lights are pretty awful to be honest. I just didn’t have any confidence in the original alarm, things were funny with it from day 1 so I went for a Concept 650 with intellistart (Remote start). Dash Part I I then worked on updating the dash. I got in touch with Si (Heckler) about his dash kit and within a few days it was on my doorstep. At the same time I had the dash panels painted in gloss black, I deliberately left the paint a bit flat on the dash as it would really dazzle in the sunlight lol. I then set about making aluminium & stainless bits and bobs to update behind the heater controls and the heater knobs. I also ordered up a set of metal monkey heater control backing things to finish it all off. Scott
Suspension Part 1: From day 1 I had trouble getting my car into the garage. Reason being that the car was really low. I wanted it up a little bit, not a lot, just enough so that it would clear the ramp into my garage without me having to run at crazy angles. I decided on the Espelir springs as they were the minimum drop I could get for the Supra (-25mm) TRD Spoiler It took long enough but I finally turned my attention to that horrific eyesore of a spoiler. I had planned on getting a TRD spoiler virtually as soon as I got the car. Bought and test fitted. I had planned on getting the spoiler painted but I decided I would be getting a full re-spray so unfortunately it sat like this for a month or so, until I decided to attack it with a can of matt black Decat & Boost Gauge When I got the car it had a 1st cat back custom exhaust on it. The 1st cat was still in place though so I changed that over with one of the Envy decats. I also changed out the Greddy boost gauge I had for a custom lit HKS one. Suspension Part II As with most modifications it is all trial and error. Even though I changed the springs on the car to higher ones than I had, the car was still too low. This was down to the TRD dampers that were on there. So I decided to bite the bullet and got myself a set of Megan Racing coilovers. Fitted them, adjusted them to the required height and the job was done. Angel Eyes I decided it was time for a change in the headlights and I had Angel Eyes in my sights. Took me a while to get it all done, as I had a bit of trial and error with the rings themselves. I bought a set of pre-facelift J-Spec lights and refurbished them at the same time, I also painted the insides to replicate facelift lights. Oopsieee Hit a bit of a blip in my modifying campaign when I decided to fit a boost controller to my car. I connected it to the wrong connection on the actuator so I was getting no change in boost levels. When I finally figured that out I was rushing to get it finished so I left it in the position I had adjusted it to, big mistake and POP goes the 2nd turbo. So tubby set no.2 had to be bought and changed over. Ate a fair chunk of change buying and getting those changed but lesson learned I guess. Gf8ZWBiYFyE g4eUio0vtBQ Induction Kit At long last I took the plunge and threw out the HKS filter that had been on the car since I got it. I went with an ARC induction kit and I have been absolutely delighted with it since buying it. It was a very expensive induction kit, hence the reason for taking so long to actually get it. Scott
Engine Bay Part I Next I went about sprucing up the rest of the engine bay. I did a fair bit of work to it including: All turbo pipes Blasted and painted Black Cam Covers blasted and painted Black Heatshield Blasted and painted Silver Hardpipe kit blasted and painted silver Coilpack Brackets blasted and painted silver Coilpacks cleaned All coilpack screws replaced Camcover Seals replaced Camcover nuts and bolts replaced Replaced blue couplers with red ones Replaced all silicone hose clips Added Strut Brace Added gas dampers Removed Bonnet stay Sorted +ive battery terminal & cable (-ive to come) Changed all vac hoses to red (Hose Techniques stuff) Painted Vac Lines black Rad Plate added Before: After: Respray: The front bumper had a crack in it when I got the car, which I made worse by using my remote start in gear lol. This meant that I needed a new bumper, which would need sprayed and also my spoiler needed sprayed. I decided that I would just go the whole hog and get a full re-spray. I decided to change the colour to Nissan Obsedian black and also fit a few other bits and bobs at the same time: Do-Luck Front Bumper – Type2 Veilside Overfenders Veilside Rear Spats TRD Spoiler (finally getting sprayed properly) UK Bonnet Scoop Cwest Rear Lens covers Likwid Art Badges Ice Install Part2: I was never happy with my initial install. It just looked to cluttered and I built it all on a budget. It was time to update it with a nice fresh build. New bits: 10" Solo Baric L5 Subwoofer Kenwood KAC-8104D Mono Amplifier Kenwood KAC-8404 4Ch Amplifier Kenwood KAC-7204 2Ch Amplifier Vibe QB69 6x9's Vibe Quick Connectors Carpet, Decals, MDF, Perspex etc. RSR II Exhaust: The custom exhaust on my car was only 2.5”. It was nice enough but when I got the chance to buy an RSR exhaust for a good price I jumped at it. I fitted it myself along with a 2nd de-cat, as the custom exhaust had the decat built in. Scott
Angel Eyes Part II: I loved my Angel Eye conversion but I had always fancied a set of glass headlights. I put my lights up for a swap and within days I had secured a nice set of UK spec lights. Of course I wasn’t going to leave them standard so that week I had them in bits and ready to have the Angel eye/Facelift conversion done. I decided to go the extra mile with these ones and shape out the inside of the lens so that the angel eyes fitted in a more OEM manor. Wheels: I had just about completed the outside look of my car, all that was lacking was some nice wheels. I opted for the wheel mania Jade-R wheels. They became a very popular choice on the Supra and it isn’t hard to see why. I went for black as I was after the stealth look. Brakes: With the new wheels on there the Brakes really stood out as needing some attention. I decided to paint them red with white Supra decals. At the same time I switched out the discs with some 3G RS-10 grooved & dimpled ones, the Pads with Chris Wilson Fast Road pads and the brake lines with bright red Goodridge stainless ones. Also while stripping everything off I found the handbrake shoes were on their last legs so I went about changing those over along with a lot of the nuts/bolts/clips etc that hold them in place. Engine Bay Part II: I had always wanted to get the intake manifold painted black to match the rest of the engine bay. I just wasn’t that confident with removing the assembly, hence why it took so long. One day I just decided to go for it along with a few other items: Intake Manifold Throttle Body HKS SSQV2 BOV ARC Induction Kit FMIC Plate Radiator Plate Intercooler Pipes TRD Oil Cap Fitted TRD Strut Brace I painted everything black leaving the hoses etc to break it up. Finishing Touches on the Outside: With everything coming together it was time to just put the finishing touches on the outside. I was going for a proper stealth look so I tinted the front indicators and the front and rear side markers. Scott
Pete Tong again: So I noticed I had a bit of an oil leak coming from the turbo. It had been like that virtually since I had the turbos changed over so I guessed the fitter had done something wrong. I turned out to just be a loose nut holding on one of the oil lines. I gave myself a nice pat on the back and thought nothing more of it until a few days later when I still had an oil leak only from the front of the engine. Turned out to be the main seal. I knew this was going to be a costly repair so I took the opportunity to get a few other things done at the same time: Oil Pump Water Pump Front Crank Seal Engine Steam Cleaned AFR Installed EGT Installed New Boost Gauge Installed I fitted the gauges with the exception of the sensors, so I had them done in a garage along with the other bits and bobs. Optima Red Top Battery and Battery Cage: I had picked up a “Supra” battery cage earlier in the year but it wasn’t compatible with stock batteries so I bided my time and eventually got my hands on a red-top battery. The battery looks great in the cage but the one major downfall is the fact that the expansion bottle doesn’t fit where I had it. Bit of a WIP on that one lol. Steering Wheel: One of the worst looking features of the stock interior is the steering wheel IMO. It just looks like a huge grandpa car steering wheel. So, it was out with the old and in with the new. I got my hands on a IS200 steering wheel (same fitment), removed and fitted a Toyota badge. Having a facelift meant that I had an airbag, kind of limited my choice of steering wheel but I think it turned out great. Before: After: Recaro Sports Seats: Finally managed to talk myself into splashing out for one of my biggest wants. I ordered the seats brand new and thankfully they fitted right onto the OEM submounts. IMO these seats are the best looking option in the Supra. I’m gutted about having to give them up due to being too big for them Edited January 16, 2011 by Scott (see edit history)
Scott
Ice Install Part III: I got 2 sets of Focal speakers. I had planned on getting them for ages and after getting some Birthday cash I decided to splash out and get them. At the same time I also built an in-glovebox install and overhauled all the software in my PC setup. 4 port USB Hub 7” Beat Monitor 4GB Ipod Nano Centrafuse 2.0 Focal 165VR 30th Anniversary Edition Focal 165CVX Spacers It didn’t go according to plan at first But it all came good in the end Coilovers Again: I seem to get bored easily lol. An offer came up for a GB on HSD coilovers so I decided not to pass it up. Sold my Megan Racing ones in favour of the HSDs. Very pleased with them, they seem a bit more solid than the Megan Racing ones, although I had no complaints. The build quality is top notch and the adjustability is fantastic. I'm just running them in at the moment but they feel fantastic. Battery Tidy: I was always annoyed with the fact that I couldn’t fit my expansion bottle in due to the new battery and cage. I decided I was going to have a go at moving it a little bit. In order to do that I would need to seriously re-work the terminal cables and the extra wires connected to the battery. I got myself 2 distribution blocks and set to work. I trimmed the +ive connection on the fusebox all the way back to a stub, that way the block attaches itself there and holds firm in place. I then routed heavy duty cable round behind where the battery will be, into the wing and out through behind the headlight. I did a similar exercise with the –ive cable and the job was done. It has tidied up the wiring and overall look in the battery area no end. At the same time I decided to look at the rats nest of wires connected to the +ive terminal due to a lazy alarm install. I have moved them up next to the charcoal canister and have 1 tidy cable now connecing them all to the newly fitted distribution block. During all this I thought it was time to spruce up some of the paint in my engine bay. As I hadn't used any special paints some of the areas were looking a little tired and in need of some attention. First I had a go with the spark plug cover, it has seen better days so I just gave it another coat with matt black. I then painted the cap screws red to go with the theme but after seeing it on the car decided against the idea so went back to black. I also re-painted the battery cage cover, the radiator plate, the FMIC plate, the radiator clamps and various screws, nuts & bolts black. At the same time I painted the viscous fan bright red along with the bonnet shut switch. *pics to follow, WIP* Edited January 20, 2011 by Scott (see edit history)

Hammer
Good thread. Car is looking nice mate, good work. Like the change of steering wheel, any chance of a picture in day light? A quick question, why does having a facelift limit your choice of s/wheel? I only ask because like you I think it's the part that lets the interior down and want to change mine. A quick question, why does having a facelift limit your choice of s/wheel? I only ask because like you I think it's the part that lets the interior down and want to change mine. The limitation is in the airbag. I believe all facelift cars come with airbags (N/A & TT)? Which limits the steering wheel choice as obviously there are only a few suitable for the Supra. If you change your wheel to a non-airbag one you must notify your insurance company and they REALLY don't like you doing that lol. I've got lots of pics I need to take anyway so will get some fresh ones up soon

Scott
Looking forward on the Build dude, and about Bloody time, lol. You finally made up your mind on the Spec your going to Run yet? Yeah mate, pretty much. The only thing that MAY change is the turbo as it would appear I can get one of the new GTX Garrett turbos for a similar price to the precision 6765. I don't think I'll lose out either way though. My chosen spec is on my shopping list thread Some great work here Scott. Loving the bodywork and styling mate. It's identical to my blue supra, how I styled it. Check out my garage. Looks the same but a different colour. Keep up the good work dude. I remember when I was looking for pics of overfenders I came across your garage. I wasn't sure if it was the same due to the fact that you were stingy with the pics Yeah mate, they look pretty much identical

Nice build thread btw and I'm sooo glad you got a nice discount on the HSD GB The Mondeo has a boot big enough for 4 bodies, plenty of bru in there.
