jonathanc
I know threads like this has been popping up but after a debate I decide to harness more opinion. Basically for this car I would be doing low annual mileage (circa 5-10k max) and most if not all of it would be done in the town centre or around the town centre. This means a lot of traffic lights, slow speeds, low average speed, start stops etc... Main criterias here are cheap tax and also cheap to run plus also must be something comfortable to be in. I think that diesels would be suitable but my mate seem to say a petrol is better on the long run. Just want to know what people think? Petrol or Diesel? Small hatch? Saloon? Auto? Manual? It has a to be a used car as its been used as a second car so budget is pretty restrictive (circa 3k?)
Josh
How about a Golf mk4 1.9 TDI? My girlfriend's Mum has a 51 plate one and she's never had a problem with it. She bought it 2nd hand from Black Horse where I got my Golf from, (Lloyds) who deal in ex company cars and has owned it for about 7 years. It's pretty economical and if my mk5 is anything to go by then it's pretty reliable and easy to drive
Abz
Will they be mainly very short journey's then Jonathan? If so, then your friend might be right & a petrol might be better & quicker to warm up. For loads of stop start & lot of sitting traffic, I'd get an auto (but it won't help your fuel consumption). I'd personally advise on getting a VW Polo, like this: http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/2385595.htm

jonathanc
yeah pretty short journeys daily. It's only around 15 miles or so to work so roughly 30 miles daily? Maybe more if I go to the shops etc... Good suggestions tho! Kind of dissapointed with the Mondeo... I've bought it after carefully reading comments but apparently the dual mass flywheel on these things goes quickly and its really costly to change... Tempted to get petrol but my previous petrols are not really economical but tbh they are all big cars with V8s edit: As for the Polo, what engine should I go for? The 1.0? Would it be a little gutless? I've seen the Lupo GTi and I kinna like it but it turns out they are pretty expensive! edit2: Check the Lupo out! http://cdn.images.pistonheads.com/aimg/2374/2374408-1.jpg
Abz
Lupo? You big girl! Here, I have found one within your budget. http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/2233622.htm Also if you are doing a round trip of 30 miles then it is not exactly short is it?!? Which then I would recommend you get a diesel to get a better fuel economy.

Well roughly 30 miles both ways which I consider short. Used to do around 100+ both ways lol.

Perfect for the daily commute: http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/2345051.htm Low mileage & diesel too, plus the 1.9 TDi engine is pretty pokey. If you go for a TDi, get it remapped as I get about 50 miles extra per tank and have about 1/3 more power from my Golf
jonathanc
Just a bit wary about diesel engines after the Dual Mass Flywheel worry on the Mondeo lol. Also heard that diesel engines are way more expensive to maintain? (ie cost more during routine servicing)? p/s: If going for Audi I might as well consider Seat? How about a MkIV Golf 4Motion? Think they would be good for wintertime?

I would have thought it would be just the glow plugs which cost more, other than that everything else on the car should be the same. Also wouldn't the diesel have longer service intervals which is a plus?
jonathanc
I think diesels need to be serviced more regularly. There's the usual oil filter etc but apparently the parts/bits cost more?
