Decatting

Decatting involves removing the catalytic convertors. There are two decats though you'll prob need to leave at least one of them on for your MOT emissions test.

You can always take both off and put them back on before your next MOT test. there's a thread on MOT questions started by another member graham s which has got some great info on going through an MOT with decats

It's a relatively easy job... In regards to performance it will improve it greatly however it will also make it a lot louder which can be either good or bad depending on what your preference is.

Talk to Paul whiffin at garage whifbitz as he sells them.

I'm not sure about this part but I think you have to also declare it to your insurance or you can say you weren't aware of the mod when you got the car which is what a lot of people do but I personally wouldn't recommend doing so.

It's an upgrade that most recommend.

It means removal of the stock catalyict convertors. On an NA it is quite simple, the 1st and 2nd cat can simple be removed and replaced with decat pipes. The stock cat temp sensor mounted to the 2nd cat just needs to be tied out of the way or cut off.

One recommendation is to have a local exhaust centre do this for you rather than DIY, the main exhuast studs can snap and can be easily replaced by those places, a little more difficult if you are at home and don't have the tools..

It will make the exhaust a little noisier, if you have an aftermarket exhaust it can make it very noisy indeed. Some say that it gives a few more HP, but I've never seen anyone prove it with a dyno result, it could be 10bhp at the top end, at the most optimistic. It will loose torque in the lower and mid range, but the noise will tell you different. It certainly won't cause any mechanical problems and you won't see any real world difference in fuel consumption.

Edit, someone beat me to it, but I will add that an NA can pass the emissions test easily without any cats and a stock exhaust.

I recently done it on my NA mate, don't need cats for Mot on NA's for some reason as they don't no it exists or something like that, it made my throttle repsponse a lot sharper, makes it loud as fook and gives a lovely back fire when lifting off, all in all it was a good mod IMO

Who done it? and where are they located. I bumped into a blue TT with cream interior in a garage on the Antrim Road Belfast and he told me his name and to give him a call but like a tool I forgot it,

Ask different folk an you'll get different opinions but from my own experience I bought my NA stock and got the following upgrades added together: Custom built racing exhaust manifold, custom built double decats, custom exhaust and backbox with small silencer (sounds awesome, not too loud), custom induction arm and filter, royal purple oil change (engine and gearbox) and iridium spark plugs.

I could feel an instant improvement in both power and response when I collected it. I also found my consumption went from 19-20mpg to 24mpg.

Stuck it on a RR a week later and it showed 245bhp at engine and 205whp. Unfortunately I didn't have it dyno'd before the changes but most stock NA's show between 205-210bhp so you make up your mind whether it's worth the cost. All that hit me for £1100 (although that also included a rocker gasket change).
