Flywheel

Anyone have experience of alternative flywheels? I find the std one gets rattly after a few weeks, and i'm looking to replace it with a flywheel that has no negitive side effects and has quality ring gear so the starter likes it.

I will be using a std size clutch.

The world is pretty much your oyster on this one . It's strange that the stock one is rattlly (do you mean as in audiable) the after market ones are far more noisy as they are not dampened like the stock one . You can get round this by upping your idle slightly so its a sacrifice one way or the other .

I fitted a new one last year. It was like driving a luxury saloon, no noise at all. Then i did a few 1/4 mile runs, and the flywheel rattles started to appear. Now its awful, very loud inside and out like before. Just dont see the point in buying the toyota one as it will last a short time and back to rattles again.

Upping the idle may end up what i do. The RPS I expect is good, as long as its quiet, this i need to know from a user of one.

I think my extra grip plus power is just out of the std clutch's range.

Thanks for the quick reply's :-)

The stockun rocks for smoothnes and noise nd they can take a lot but they hate 1/4 and track use with big power ( depends how hard you use it, pulls on the M/way are nothhing to the abuse on track) . They were made for quietness and although they can handle quite big power in everyday use the dampener gets killed by track/drag. Most if not all after market flywheels are non dampened so affraid to say you will get the singer rattle at idle ( can be anoying ) like i say upping the iddle rids this. The stock one works with rotational dampers that soak up any unwanted lash and ratles that the engine creates as well as engagement clap, this also make them heavy. After market ones are also lighter so some responce is given although this effects the cruise a little loosing some inertia. its a trade off.

RPS ,Findaza,Gtech engineering are but a few of the many available and there are quite a few. TBH i'm quite in favour of the lightened steel ones with replaceable friction surfaces ( i.e ) findaza. This make them servicable and also very resilient. A lot of them are alloy flywheels...so after a few clutch changes the threads for the clutch cover become weak and i've seen a few strip even before you get any were near the torque for fastening .

HTH ..and if there is any spelling mistakes/not clear tough ...sun's got to me LOL :D

As far as lighten FW's go the RPS Cyn-RG is the best I have tried. All the LW will rattle and raising the idle helps significantly as Mig pointed out. The RPS seemed to rattle less, but it was still there.

Yep, RPS fly for me and it does indeed make the gearbox sound like a bag of spanners. You also get a rattly graunching noise at low revs in a high gear, e.g. when pulling from 2000 revs or so in 4th or above. People often ask me what's broken. It does drive slightly better with more engine response, and is good for track days when you heel 'n toe. Next time I have to change the clutch it's going in favour of a standard one though.

Ive been through a few setups and I like what Im currently running A LOT..

Stock Fw

Southbend pressure plate

HP feaks bronze 6 puck..

It slips well after break in and is great around London. It also holds over 600 bph so my single setup is working with it very nicely.

:thanks:
