Lurch
Hello, my car seems to have broken its second alternator after 6months of changing it. Any idea what could cause this? I have a vented bonnet which is open to the elements, so I thought that might be a factor?
Abz
Are you running any after market audio? The second alternator you fitted, was it a new one or did you refurb it?
Lurch
Yeah it had and still has a small sub 'n' amp from when I bought it. But its been fine for a year, then the first alternator went so I bought a second hand one from keron and now thats gone. I said 6months but it was alot less i do believe. Swampy442
Fitting second hand parts is always a lottery, might last 5 mins might last 5 years Best to get it refurbed, that way you know its good and you get a warrantee.
Lurch
Yea your right, but thats very bad luck that 2 alternators died. I hadn't used the car for quite a while, so the battery was down alot and apparently alternators dont like it when a battery is very low?? SupraP-Z
Well if the battery is low, the alternator has a harder job of charging the batt back up to its full voltage, but it shouldnt be a major problem though. I wouldve just put the battery on a trickle charge just to be safe, then connected it back up. Did you ever measure the voltage at the batt terminals while the car was running to see what the voltage was reading?
adnanshah247
crap battery + crap wiring for your sounds system = dead alternator
Lurch
Sorted!. After buying an alternator turns out a wire had corroded and snapped off the plug that goes onto the alternator. All fixed and she lives.
