gazzi123
Hi peeps, ive been desperate to get into car performance tuning for few years now and ive done hardly anything about it as i dont know were to start. Is there any courses/books people recommend to be able to understand in more detail how it is done etc? Cheers all
imi
Are you a mechanic?
gazzi123
im not qualified mechanic no - ive taught myself basic stuff and learnt things off my other halfs dad who is mechanic + does car restoration - ive taught myself professional car detailing ect but really want to move onto car mechanic/performance tuning , but due to being shift work ect i cant do a course at college and some companies ive asked for a 'apprentice' type work (not paying me anything just wanting to learn on my days off) said they cant offer me anything - so i just want to broaden my knowledge and start learning now. mark newman
why dont you start on your own car first. by fitting a single turbo, and a six speed box.
gazzi123
i would love too - but its all money - as my supra is my daily drive aswell i dont have another car - ill have to buy another cheap run around (ruffly (£1500-£2000 with insurance) - 6speed box £2-£3k etc - i am trying to save as much as i can but its no way near the amount for another run around - i just like to start learning whilst i can getting knowledge/working alongside people who do it or have done it before and just shadow someone - only way ill be able to do it is sell the supra and maybe get a 1990 supra + a daily run about. just wondering if anyone is prepared to help me out (just on my days off to learn) or any books/courses or how people got into doing it. Nic
I worked for free in my school and college holiday for a local prestige car engineers, a lot of the time I was fetching parts, cleaning things, keeping the place tidy and making tea, but I also got to learn a lot just by watching and chatting with the mechanics, the owner also let me work on my own car out of hours and when they weren't busy. They were long days as i also had a 2nd job on the evenings, but the experience and knowledge I learnt was invaluable and well worth the effort. I think the only way you'll get into it is either working on your own car and learning or volunteering your time.
shima60
Buy a banged up second car like a 95 civic etc...and work on that they are cheap and easy to work on. Be a good step into learning engines and modifying them.
Swampy442
Do you mean electronic tuning or mechanical tuning? If its mechanical it does help if youre mechanically minded and interested in cars. Its all just nuts and bolts

Its all just nuts and bolts Thats more or less what i would have said, if you have the aptitude for that kind of thing its easy to pick up and learn as you go, i would talk more to your other halves father and see if he can point you in the right direction. If its electronic tuning then there are a few books out there, and there are also courses.
