markssupra
Hi all, Had a search, but cannot find anything about removing the drive shafts from the hubs. I have dropped the whole subframe and loosened the diff ends of the shafts but the shafts seem stuck inside the hubs. I've sprayed with WD40 and given them a hearty tap, but no movement at all. Would a large bearing puller work, pulling against the hub? Any ideas gratefully received Thanks Mark

Homer
When you say bit more than a light tap, have you tried an extremely large one or two? I had the same problem with one of shafts on my car (ex drag use), the only thing that worked was using a 9lb sledge and a good few very heavy hits to get it to move. The nut is not reusable anyway, so best to use that and a strong socket rather than the shaft itself. Otherwise, a press is probably a better way if you have access to one. On one side even this didn't work since the spline was twisted, so ended up getting a replacement hub and shaft for about £80.
markssupra
Cheers Daryl, I was hoping there may have been a less brutal way, but I will try a larger hammer
Oddball87
Can you remove the diff without removing the drive shaft from the hub, just from the diff. If you no what i mean? Thanks
Homer
Can you remove the diff without removing the drive shaft from the hub, just from the diff. If you no what i mean? Thanks Yes you can, just remove the allen key bolts from the drive shaft flange that fits to the diff, the CV joints will compress so just pull it away from the diff to release
Oddball87
Mega thanks Homer. One more thing is the diff ok to paint? If it is high temp paint?
Homer
It's okay to paint the diff casing, but the back plate should be left unpainted ideally (as Toyota intended). High temp isn't needed so something like a hamerite or any heavy paint should be fine.
