chazuk
A friend is selling a complete 99 spec vvti with 78k on the clock tempted as its a newer block and the vvti ,or be a good spare in the back of the garage just in case my single finishes my engine off. I have had a quick search but could not find the answers I am looking for ; Are these defiantly better and worth having over the older lump? How much on a rough figure does a complete vvti engine sell for as I am not sure what to pay for it ? Can I use aftermarket intake like a greddy ? ECU's as I guess the power fc would not be designed for the vvti what is ?
johnny g
You'd need to get the loom with the engine, the ECU too. The rods aren't as beefy as the non-VVTi, the turbos are the same. The head is obviously different and the drive-by-wire system, which means you can't use the Greddy intake, without converting to cable throttle linkage. As for aftermarket ECUs, many will work, but only a few will drive the DBW throttle and the VVTi system. The Power FC would possibly work with cable throttle and no VVTi. The engine is worth as much as he'll take for it

Branners
There's a really good set of videos somewhere on the forum showing what the benefits are of the VVTI and how the FBW stuff works. It really is vastly more complex than a non-VVTi block but when you get up to single turbo level most people seem to throw the benefits away as most aftermarket ECUs wont cope with FBW and all the other great stuff it does. To be honest fitting a non-vvti engine may be a better solution but if the engine is going cheap somebody on the forum may want it.
