CJ
I have a small problem with my PC sound output. I normally leave my PC on overnight as that is usually when I D/L things. Then, when I get up in the morning, none of the sound functions work. It is as is the whole sound part has "gone to sleep" and the only way I can get it back to normal is to restart the PC. Here are the specs for the PC. Is there a sleep function on the sound side of things that I can alter or is it something else I need to do? pistonbroke
I've always had problems with PC's waking from sleep mode irrespective of OS. If you go into the power managment options and turn off the ECO settings, it won't sleep. You can then customize the option to just let the moniter sleep after an hour or so, leaving the rest of the PC running.

I run the PC through my TV via a HDMI cable and turn the TV off at night and so the PC should be running as per normal (i.e. with the programs running too). In saying that, as now dont need the monitor power saving function on, I might as well as turn the sleep setting off completely and see what that does. Edit to add: I checked the power saving settings and unchecked the monitor off to now be never (as it is never on) and the PC setting was "never sleep" too. imi
Have you checked to see whether the sound is muted Also worth checking under device manager whether the soundcard is showing without any issues Perhaps look for updated drivers as it might be a bug
Ric
how do you connect to the TV, HDMI? are you putting sound down the HDMI? or do you have a seperate phono cable you are using

Not checked the drivers yet and will do so when I go home later tonight.
CJ
how do you connect to the TV, HDMI? are you putting sound down the HDMI? or do you have a seperate phono cable you are using Initially I connected via HDMI but also connected to a surround system via the 3mm jack out to phono in. That worked fine up until just before Xmas when suddenly the sound output stopped. I now only use the HDMI and it works fine - until I leave it overnight. Ric
so the sound is set via HDMI to the tv yes? I had this issue on my media center set up, its somthing to do with when you turn off the TV the HDMI sync is lost and it doesent resync the sound proporly when you turn the tv back on I solved this by changing the connection method to componant with a seperate connection for the sound. But it could be somthing simpler like the soundcard b0rked/overheat perhaps

I say that as my PC is on all the time during the day too and if it was an overh4eat / borked soundcard then that should show up then too as well as after the night time being on. imi
If it is a hdmi sync issue then does it work if you disconnect the hdmi cable and reconnect it
CJ
If it is a hdmi sync issue then does it work if you disconnect the hdmi cable and reconnect it I'm not sure. I will try that when I get home later. I am working until midnight so wont be able to find out until then.
CJ
Well, that's strange. I just got home after about 8 hours out of the house and after leaving the PC on (and TV off) for that time the sound is working OK.
CJ
Well, for whatever reason, the PC has not done the same thing since. And I have even managed to get my surround speakers working again - despite not really doing anything different! So, at the moment, alls good. Thanks for the replies and help - much appreciated. a98pmalcolm
good to hear u sorted, audio via hdmi soundnt turn off wether u have tv in or off. Im always turning off my tv with the pc on. Sometimes Windows desides to use my Creative sound card and not my ATI graphics card for audio, when that happens i just pull out and plug the hdmi back in and then it reconises the TV.
