Benyon
Why do Non-Religious People Celebrate Christmas? No offence to anyone, but on the basis of what? Since essentially Christmas is the celebration of the birth of Christ, and I presume if you don't believe in God, you don't believe in Jesus either. Now if some state it's a get together, because of the season, why December why not another day? Me personally I beleive in anything and everything. I beleive were not alone in this universe and ignorant as I sound I do beleive in GOD. I mean look at science they always run back to their drawing boards, they are always discovering more planets, suns, solar systems etc.^ Hey any excuse to get loads of beer in and eat to much nice food while not having to work for a week or so, That would be my reasoning. P.S. I dont believe any of that bible stuff I think it was made to stop everyone going nuts at the time before science could explain real things about the world/universe. JustGav
For me it is more of a celebration of the years activities, time to unwind a bit and enjoy time with friends and family. If that is under the guise of Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanza, Ramadan or whatever...so be it.

Max Headroom
Still though some interesting stuff, it would be amazing to discover another life form in our universe. http://blog.speculist.com/2010/12/new-life-form-discovered.html They have! jazz1
I beleive they have some proof, but due to our society and relgions etc, they won't release what they have discovered.
Tannhauser
Why do Non-Religious People Celebrate Christmas? That was the question I asked myself at 16, concluded that there was no reason, and stopped. I don't buy the 'it was taken over by Christians' business. It's inconveniently christian through and through. You talk about science like it's an entity with it's own thoughts, feelings etc which constantly changes its mind. I've always thought of science as a mindset, a way of doing things and thinking objectively. I don't understand why some people seem to hold a view that 'science' is a single set of beliefs that conflict with religion - there are as many conflicts within scientific views as there are within religious ones. Good post. Agreed. so what would you expect people to do if they do not celebrate Christmas? Just try to ignore the whole thing, ask to go in to work on a bank holiday and when people give them presents say that they have chosen not to participate and can they take their presents back please? Why do people go to weddings or birthday parties when they dont really know the person all that well? They feel obliged and also like a good party. In life you have to participate, otherwise you may as well be a hermit and hide in a cave. It's not that difficult to find a pleasant compromise. I enjoy the time off. If someone wants to buy me a present, that's their business. If I want to buy someone a present, I will - no matter the time of year. Why wait for Jesus' nominal birthday? I can't imagine why anyone would go to a wedding or party from a sense of obligation. To what end? What sort of person would invite you -and expect you to go to - something that you weren't interested in? In life, you have to participate in what you want to, then be a big boy and say no to the rest.
edinlexusV8
I am a non believer and so dont follow any religion. But I like christmas becoz I like to send/receive presents, like family dinners, playing XBox with relatives, eating loads of sweets and drinking loads of alcohol. Nobody exactly knows when christ was born, the calendars are also different at that time. But December 25 is a significant date as it is related to winter solstice. Check the following link for more info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winter_solstice
peter richards
when i was young i did the usual sunday morning with my gran then sunday school in the afternoon , but once old enough to ask straight forward questions and not get the same replies i stopped , big row in the house but backed up by my old man . personally i find the whole religion thing hypocritical. id love to have seen the size of noah's boat, and the chaos inside as its normal i think for animals to eat each other
Purity14
Maybe you have not, but surely there must be some Christians who don't follow the bible. Just curious to know some peoples views :-) How can you be a Christian, if you do not follow the Bible to the word?

Purity14
I never stated I was a Christian, read the posts properly :-) I didnt imply that you were, I mearly stated that to be a Christian, you must believe in the Bible. Silly really, since I can hold a Bible in my hand, It exists - and I believe in it. If you dont believe in the Bible, what do you see when you go to the Library, blank shelves where the Bible should be?
Scott
Christmas has very little to do with Christianity anymore. Most kids don't even know that Christmas is anything to do with the alleged birth of baby Jesus. I absolutely love Christmas. Time off work to enjoy with Friends and family, an excuse to spoil the kids and decorate the house in a festive manor. Takes away the gloom of Winter and cheers up most of the nation. I hate all forms of religion, but contrastingly I love the idea of faith..... even though I have none. Nothing wrong with having a little hope in your life, I just don't agree with using peoples "faith" to control them

jonathanc
I am curious actually after reading through this thread. I am Chinese but I don't really follow any religion (although parents are Buddhists). I just believe in God (general sense). However, every Christmas I put out the Xmas tree, I put presents around it, I open presents together with the family. So I guess I could be considered one of them non religious (since I don't believe in a single religion but more of a general one) person? Why do I celebrate Xmas? Because its fun. Because I like it. Because it brings the family together. Because it brings smiles to my kids' faces. Thats why I celebrate Xmas.

As a sidenote, if I had to chose a religion to follow (gun to the head stuff), it would be buddhism lol. It's the most easy going of the major religions IMO
