Why do Non-Religious People Celebrate Christmas?

No offence to anyone, but on the basis of what? Since essentially Christmas is the celebration of the birth of Christ, and I presume if you don't believe in God, you don't believe in Jesus either. Now if some state it's a get together, because of the season, why December why not another day?

Me personally I beleive in anything and everything. I beleive were not alone in this universe and ignorant as I sound I do beleive in GOD. I mean look at science they always run back to their drawing boards, they are always discovering more planets, suns, solar systems etc.^

Why not? :)

The thing is, we're meant to be living in a predominantly Christian country. For that reason, it's the 'accepted thing' to celebrate the national events. Same as bank holidays and all that. In other countries I've been in I've had to accept - and to a certain extent partake in - the celebrations of holidays in other cultures.

It's just what you do :)

Ok you say about living in an Christian country, but what about the people who don't follow Christianity. I'm taking about Christians here, who still celebrate Christmas but don't beleive in the bible, meaning they dont beleive in Jesus?

I've not met a Christian who doesn't believe in the bible.

Then again iv read some Athesiest who follow Christmas. But I find that funny, because they reject the existence off their creation. If they celebrate Christmas that means they must have some beleif in God.

I'm an atheist and still celebrate Christmas, as it's an opportunity to spend time with family and friends. I'd assume it's basically because the country (and other countries) used to be more religous and as science has become more advanced with other theories of how life could have been created, religion doesn't have as much presence as previous generations. It still remains a national holdiday for the 25th though just becaue it'd be near impossible to remove Christmas a holiday and a 'get together' isn't really an excuse to have a day off work.

The simple one word answer: heritage

Maybe you have not, but surely there must be some Christians who don't follow the bible. Just curious to know some peoples views :-)

What is your definition of a Christian? As surely a Christian must follow the bible to some extent as it is what Christianity is based on.

Right now I'm laughing at science, good night.

I've always thought that internet access shouldn't be available to 'just anybody'. I think you should have to pass a test and get a permit to use it. People like Jazz do nothing to make me think otherwise.

I think your after stirring something up here.

Anyway its a public holiday where you make the effort to spend time with friends and family. I'd imagine thats why everyone celebrates xmas

After a quick google

History, in fact, shows that Christmas predates Christ by many centuries. Tertullian, an early cleric of the Catholic Church (A.D. 155-220), taught that Christmas and the New Year's season were pagan—in other words, they were based on the polytheistic religions of ancient Rome and its predecessors. He acknowledged that this infamous annual pagan season stretched from early December to early January. To the church, Tertullian railed against the entire season as a time of wholly heathen practices.

You do realise Christmas isn't a Christian celebration don't you? I mean, it's been worshipped for years before Jesus had anything to do with it.

:yeahthat:

We are all celebrating the sun. It would take too long to explain but try watching zeitgeist, i put off watching it for over a year but glad i did now. It explains religion, what started the world wars, the twin towers & more. Well worth a watch imo

I am not religious but I do believe in something I suppose as when the shit hits the fan I tend to look to the sky and ask for help, from who exactly.....I don't know..!!

I have now celebrated 35 Christmas' and not once thought about Jesus at any of them to be honest. I have looked forward to giving and receiving prezzies, eating chocolate, having some decent films on the TV and having Turkey sandwiches for the following days after.

That's me I'm afraid..!!
