Scott
Ok I thought I knew what a "hot shoe" was but going by what is available for me I am wrong. I was under the impression that "hot shoe" meant that the power was taken from the camera to run it. I'm looking to get a speedlight flash for my camera (450D) and the one that keeps cropping up in reviews is the Canon Speedlite 430EXII. According to the specs it uses 4AA batteries. What is the deal here? Am I looking at the wrong thing? I would rather have one that used the camera battery rather than seperate batteries as it is just a PITA to have to charge and swap over etc. At the same time I want a decent flash so does anyone have any suggestions advice? Do I just need to grin and bare it? I'm fed up with the "BUSY" sign coming up on my camera when I am taking multiple photos.
Westcoaster
I used to be into SLR photography back in the day, and the hot shoe was the way that the flash gun was triggered by the camera, not powered by it. Flashguns usually have AA batteries or rechargeable packs. As to a modern recommendation, I'll leave that to someone else!
Ric
hot shoe is the trigger and bus for flash information TTL etc, almost all speed lights need batteries
Scott
Damnit!! lol. Ok guys, seems that one might be the best for me. So a cold shoe, how does that work then? Surely the camera would need to trigger it for it to work? Pressing the flash then hitting the camera would surely be a gamble?
RobSheffield
Maybe you need a Lukewarm shoe?

Wez
Nice unit that, I use the 580ex II on my 400D and it makes a huge difference as you can wind the iso right down. Mine is the same with it's own power
