jackso11
If the stock turbos were to fail, is htere any reason you would replace them with new J-spec ones and not stronger steel fin UK specs? Just wondering as mine have both been replaced about 9k ago by the previous owner and wondered why they went for brand new J-specs turbos instead of putting UK ones on there. SupraShaun
I *think* you need additional parts to go from Jspec turbos to UK's.
Nic
The UK turbos are not a straight swap, they also spool up slower than the J-spec turbos.
jackso11
Am I right in thinking hybrids are J-Spec with UK-spec metal fins?
Guigsy
Am I right in thinking hybrids are J-Spec with UK-spec metal fins? They are metal fins but not uk ones as uk fins are smaller
jackso11
does it cost much to put metal fins in? I am thinking as I have nearly new turbos it might be a good time to put metal fins in.
Nic
Am I right in thinking hybrids are J-Spec with UK-spec metal fins? No. The metal UK compressor/turbine wheels and shafts are smaller than the equivalent J-spec and would not fit the housings. Hybrid turbos are either J-spec or UK Spec turbo housings that have non-standard turbine and compressor wheels fitted, usually the housings are machined out to accept larger all metal innards. Nic
does it cost much to put metal fins in? I am thinking as I have nearly new turbos it might be a good time to put metal fins in. For what reason? If you have nearly new J-spec turbos you should be laughing, run them no higher than 1.2bar and they *should* give you great response, decent power (upto around 430hp with supporting mods) and last you a good long time. Hybrid turbos with larger metal innards are noticeably more laggy - larger, heavier turbines take longer to spool up -, most only offer a modest increase in power and they can be prone to premature bearing/seal wear. The only reason to go this route would be if one of your turbos blew.
jackso11
in that case I will stick to what I have then, thanks for the info Nic
