Brazil
Guys, Only recently my work 'major oil & gas company' has blocked access to Facebook I work offshore in Africa for a month at a time and I am totally missing staying in touch with my friends. I've searched a couple of sites, they suggest using a free proxy 'by pass' sites but they are also blocked. Any suggestions?
imi
if they have blocked the proxy sites then dont really see a simple way around this other than remote desktop'ing into your home PC over the internet and surfing on that
Purity14
Why are they blocked? Also, do you not have a smartphone? I used to just have VNC running on my home computer, and connect to it either using the client exe file or the java webclient. Not for facebook though, dreadded thing. Purity14
If you have a smartphone like android, you can tether it to your computer and use it to access the web.

The-Plethora
Yep remote desktop is the way to go! I use facebook at work that way and when I travel away it's handy to be able to think of stuff to download and coming home to loads of new stuff. Also makes applying for jobs at work a lot safer. JustGav
*shock* *horror* no facebook.... Really? Is it that important? What's wrong with email/phone for those that you REALLY want to let know what you are doing
Brazil
FYI: I have to log in to my computer using a smart badge, I am offshore I do not receive any phone signal. I've got a blackberry curve, but I am wanting to change it to an Iphone 4.
Brazil
A friend suggested me asking for the IT guys at work to grant me remote access to my pc at home. Will this work? will I be able to access facebook like that?
Brazil
To tell you the truth what I miss the most is chatting up girls and working on dates from when I get back from offshore..! If it is who I think it is (your employer), then their network used to use a secure proxy server anyway, and you won't be allowed to change software or connect your own hardware. Have you tried the simpler approach of asking the IT guys if they could enable it for the offshorers to keep contact with family... IT guys aren't all geeks sat in corner attempting to make user's live's hell.... well okay a few of us are BOFHs
The-Plethora
You might find it will 'just work' as remote desktop is quite a common thing and they may well use it themselves, depends how tied down the system is. Do you connect straight to the modem at home or do you have a router? easy enough to test it from a friends house first.
leelbuk
Use remote desktop, VNC, logmein etc to connect to a home PC with internet access. If you want to be even more clever you can even set your home PC up as a proxy server and use it to connect through to the internet using your browser on your work PC depending on how far they've gone trying to prevent you doing such things. EDIT: wow, surprising how many people can post in the time it took me t write a reply! Must concentrate harder!

Attero
That's quite unfair that they block Facebook... unless you make daily trips.
MrRalphMan
They have obviously blocked it for a reason, although spending a month there at a time it seems a little unfair to block the social sites. But if they have blocked it and you attempt to circumnavigate this block, you could leave yourself open to disciplinary action. Maybe not now, but a few months down the line, if they ever need to cut numbers, it's the sort of thing that can be used against you. monsween
Thats a shame dude, can you just not use the rigs computers? Or have they banned facebook too? I was on the RG7 the other week in the north sea with all your buddies
GlennK
Also, the 'remote desktop' web service ports most likely will be blocked ... worth a try though. There are a few on the web. Just download the web client onto your 'home PC', set up an account and away you go. Good Luck

I will ask the AD to use his line at the end of his shift his a cool Canadian dude I am sure he will allow me a wee FB fix to keep me going.. hahah
The-Plethora
You can always change the port that remote desktop listens on, I think you need to go into the registry to make the change. Best thing about remote desktop is everything happens remotely so they won't see any browsing history, torrent site, nothing, I use MSN messenger in the same way, very useful.
