jonathanc
Was just wondering what is the purpose of having two gigabit ethernet port on my home PC? (Asus Rampage 2) mobo. Is the only use to connect to another network ie when you are at a LAN party? I am wondering if I can use some kind of load balancing when connecting to the same network. I know if wont increase internet speeds but I hope it would increase transfers from server to my PC.
Purity14
so you can plug it into itself and ping loopback to achieve time travel?
penguin
odd! i guess you could use one as a dedicated internet port and the other for your home network?
penguin
so you can plug it into itself and ping loopback to achieve time travel? that sounds very plausible.... maybe he's already travelled back in time and posted this - so more of us can become time travellers

jonathanc
odd! i guess you could use one as a dedicated internet port and the other for your home network? Was thinking of something like this but that would just mean plugging an ethernet from my router (ADSL modem router with 4 ports) directly to one port. However, the other port would be plugged into a gigabit switch which in turns plugs directly into the modem lol so I don't see the difference? Just a bit confused about this. I know I can connect to two different networks (diff subnets) at once but I don't need to do that at the moment, nor do I have access to another network... Must be some home use of these ports unless it's try its purely for LAN gaming sessions ...
johnny g
So you can act like a gateway. You could have one port direct to the Internet, the other bound to your home network Subnet and all traffic would go through your PC's internet port. Could make it work like a Proxy Server/Web Server for external access and firewall, etc etc.
JustGav
Bond the ports together and get twice the bandwidth
jonathanc
Bond the ports together and get twice the bandwidth That's what I think I just did Downloaded a utility called "Network Control Utility for Aggregation and VLANs in x86 & x64 XP, Server 2003, Vista, Server 2008" and now I am getting a reported connection speed of 2GB/s. Just going to do some tests to see if that's just numbers... would be so awesome if I could do this on my HP Mediasmart server

jonathanc
I am using Netgear GS605 which I reckon is a decent switch? I've already ordered some proper Cat6 RJ45s as I am using a mixture of unknown wires atm. I noticed a slight improvement in file transfers to the server. I am getting an average of 30MB/s which is ok. Just have to keep trying
