jonathanc
Noticed the mpg on the Mondeo wasn't what I would've expected it but then again it is a fairly big car. (I am looking at getting BlueFin but that would be a very expensive option if no difference were felt...) I am just wondering what smaller cars would people recommend? Personally, I do not really like small cars as most of them are crap. Bad build quality, bad engine and generally bad to drive (only saving grace is mpg I guess). However, I'm sure I am wrong and there are some new, cheap, cheerful and economical small cars about! I am hoping to get something well built and comfy though. Budget is somewhere below 5k but not really buying ASAP just eyeing for next car. I am mostly doing city mileage with ave speed of 15-20mph with occasional jaunt on the motorways in the weekends. Any recommendations?
Gaz6002
The Polo BlueMotion is exactly the car you need, but it's too expensive for you. Personally I'd look at the Skoda Fabia TDI. One like this: http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201049374946939/sort/priceasc/usedcars/maximum-mileage/up_to_40000_miles/price-to/5000/price-from/4000/fuel-type/diesel/model/fabia/make/skoda/page/1/radius/1501/postcode/pe26ea?logcode=p Have you considered leasing an electric car? £397 per month gets you a Nissan Leaf on a three year PCP deal, only cost a few quid to 'fill up' and will do 100 miles to a charge. More than enough for what you need. Also, congestion charge exempt and free road tax as well.

Gaz6002
Really? How much are they? What about just a diesel (1.9 I think) Polo. You get more for your money from the Skoda IMO. Have a look on Autotrader. There aren't any decent BlueMotion cars in budget

Gaz6002
one of these perhaps ? Kill it. Kill it now! In all seriousness, we have one of the new CDI ones in the office this week for a test. Should be interesting... they're becoming famous for optimistic MPG claims.

Dnk
Kill it. Kill it now! Surely its the perfect town car, 60 mpg arent they ? nice and small so easy to park. i doubt any other petrol or diesels will get anywhere near that mpg at 15-20mph town driving

It was featured on Watchdog because of the laughable MPG claims. Besides, it's horrific to drive IMO. The perfect town car for me is the Fiat 500 twin air. Matt H
I've heard that the government will be offering very tempting cash incentives to buy a new electric car in the new year. Obviously, there's a trade off in style with an electric car, but it might be worth waiting to see what they offer. If the scrappage scheme was anything to go by, there may be a few grand at stake. You then get zero road tax and ultimate low running costs.

You then get zero road tax and ultimate low running costs. It's going to be £5k off the price of a choice of nine electric cars. Thing is, most people won't buy them anyway. They'll lease them because it makes more sense as servicing etc is included. The £5k is then absorbed in the deal and the consumer actually doesn't see the difference. Quite clever when you think about it. Company car drivers will benefit most, because company car tax isn't payable on non-CO2 emitting cars. A 2.0-litre Astra will cost more to run than an electric car.
Samsar
http://www.seat.co.uk/ My mrs has got a new Seat Ibiza SC 1.6 Auto and it's a dream to drive and returning 40-50 mpg... Seat also do an Ibiza Ecomotive with £0 road tax and returning 80mpg Her one costs £170 pm on PCP deal and if I remember the Ecomotive was a cheaper car
Swampy442
Look no further than the Seat Arosa tdi or VW Lupo tdi, cheap tax, epic mpg, 75hp 3 cylinder engine. I had an Arosa a few years back and it was great, I wouldnt mind another now but too expensive for my daily smoker

Do you have a link? http://www.seat.co.uk/ My mrs has got a new Seat Ibiza SC 1.6 Auto and it's a dream to drive and returning 40-50 mpg... If I was looking for an cost effective daily driver, I just don't think 40-50mpg cuts in nowadays for a brand new motor. My 2000 reg 1.8tdi escort is down to return 46mpg and that's for a model that came out in the early 90's. For something new, I'd want to see at least 60mpg plus. On another note, I've seen some of the specs for company cars that our sister company offer and the Volvos all seem to be top notch in the MPG cats. Gaz6002
I didn't realise it had been annouched already. Do you have a link? It's been covered quite a lot already: http://www.parkers.co.uk/News/News/Electric-car-grant-sparks-in-to-life/ The nine cars qualifying are: Mitsubishi i-MiEV - January 2011 smart fortwo electric drive - January 2011 Peugeot iOn - January 2011 Nissan Leaf - March 2011 Tata Vista - March 2011 Citroen CZero - Early 2011 Vauxhall Ampera - Early 2012 Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid - Early 2012 Chevrolet Volt - Early 2012 The best is the Leaf, the iOn a close second but I bet the Prius will be good too. Haven't driven that yet.
Matt H
Astonmartin Cygnet Ah, the love child of a supercar manufacturer and absurd legislation. “Mr Ashton, you need to produce excessive carbon designing and building a pointless car to meet our un-thought-out legislation” “Ok then Brussels, how about this, the cygnet. It will retail at £30,000, so obvious, if someone’s got £30k to blow on a car, they won’t care about the low tax and MPG savings this thing will offer” What is the point? It surely will only appeal to either nutters or hardcore Aston enthusiasts?
