At the end of the day all she had to do was brake one accident is fine we all have them but 4 or 5 in one go , as already said the say young drivers put insurance up old people are 100 times worse , they should be retested at 65 and then every 5 years there after , there reactions are to slow , what if there had been a mother and baby somewere in that lot she could have kill someone easy , Rich.

Even worse than that if it was into a group of people, by the time she had stopped going back and forward there is no telling the carnage that would have happened.

to be honest I'm not really that fussed about it- when I got the call I thought "oh f**k, this sounds bad" but the damage is minimal. The woman really needs her car and I'm on speaking terms with her (before this!) so I'm with Chris and wont be taking any action against her - accidents happen, she flapped and could have handled it ALOT better though... my neighbor whos Kia and BMW got smashed tried to get into the car to nab the keys when she was over the road before she fired over into my garden, but again, in a panic the oldy just hit reverse by mistake...

Ofcourse the main concerns are 'what if', the street is very popular with kids (bmw/kia owner has twin girls - lots of wee kids running about) and I've just found out that there were cars holding up traffic - watching her do her thing....so it couldve been alot worse had she hit/been hit by a bus or hit any pedestrians.

Never mind, gas is sorted, heating is back on, patio doors are fixed and theres a corsa shaped orniment in my garden :) the joys!

my only regret is not having my CCTV set up yet - coulda been one for youtube!

That's the Christmas spirit, get her banned. OK. she got in a flap, but she's probably struggling with all sorts of pressures, with the economy, weather, God knows what else. Give her a break. Taking an old person's mobility off them is like taking away a younger person's sex life, probably worse than that :)

Next time she goes through the pressures of every day life, and has a "flap" who knows who will be between her car and a wall! I'd seriously consider talking to her about surrendering her license if she was my relative... something very similar happened with my nan - it's very tough, but has to be done I'm afraid.

I seem to be in the minority, not an unfamiliar position for me, so no worries, but that's a nice gesture. Obviously if she has gone gaga and makes a habit of bizarre actions behind the wheel she should be spoken to, in person, in a kindly manner, and tactfully. It would be far more manly than rushing to the post with a letter for the jobsworths at DVLA. I am sure any reasonable person would see that their driving or reactions had deteriorated if it happened again. I think you have been tactful, humorous and generous :) If the worst comes to the worst she could move to the West Midlands where, the TV tells me, we have the worst obesity in Europe. Her driving might make pedestrians more active, and thus fitter.

I do recall my late father taking a roundabout in an anti clockwise direction in Winsford. He was pretty elderly then. My wife was with him and was very alarmed. She badgered me until I reluctantly tackled him about it. He drew my attention to the perilous state of the points on my licence, and damn me, the next week I drove up a one way street in Manchester with him with me, the wrong way..... Pots and kettles and colours were mentioned :)

One is a fundamental of driving, the other is being lost. Hardly the same thing ;)

Chris, you've gone all empathetic on us! :)

Shoot her.

Firm but fair.

I think everyone should be re-tested every 10 years. You wouldn't need lessons (well, some might!), only the test.

If I was the OP I'd probably let this slide, with a niggling concern at the back of my mind that the old lady would be incapable of performing an emergency stop when it matters.
