AlliRR
So - I was on my way to a site meeting today when I get a phonecall from my next door neighbor saying.... "someones crashed into your house!".... obviously in disbelief I turn the car around and head home to check it out..... The story is that the poor wee old dear over the road from me tried to pull away from her parking space.... accidently put it into reverse and wheelspun her way into the Kia Jeep... then into her own fence/garden (pic 3). In a panic she's put her auto into drive and floored the GO pedal... wheelspun her way into a parked BMW then into someones driveway - wrecking their gates and fence....(pic 5) at this point shes banged it back into reverse and floored the pedal again.... travelling around 40 meters - over a busy road, up the pavement - through my fence, hedge and embankment.... over my lawn.... and into the house crushing the gas main, smashing my french doors and doing some other wee bits n bobs. So thats that, the old lady that did it has broken arm and leg.... best thing about the situation was - aparently when she was getting carried out of the corsa she said to my neighbor and the police "thank god I didnt his new car!" aww bless.... End

Paul
Hope they ban her, clearly not fit to drive anymore. And they say youngsters put up premiums, few grands worth of damage there. My next door neighbour is in her late 70's and the other year she came back from shopping and opened the hatch on her yaris, she then forgot to put it back down as she drove forward in to the garage. When it made contact with the up and over garage door she crapped herself and slammed it in reverse, this resulted in the tailgate folding back over the roof of the car and tearing the garage door off !! You've got to laugh, problem is my neighbour won't give up driving until she's killed someone.

Thank god she missed the supra. Hopefully the bones heal okay but at least they will keep her off the roads for a bit.

Jord
Does it make me a bad person that the first thought going through my head whilst reading this was 'good job she didn't hit the supra!' lol Good read though, I always wonder how people manage to crash into houses. OK. she got in a flap, but she's probably struggling with all sorts of pressures, with the economy, weather, God knows what else. Give her a break. Taking an old person's mobility off them is like taking away a younger person's sex life, probably worse than that
Westcoaster
Does it make me a bad person that the first thought going through my head whilst reading this was 'good job she didn't hit the supra!' lol Good read though, I always wonder how people manage to crash into houses. What, like these? My mother in law wrote off her Daihatsu Charade by confusing the big rectangular brake pedal with the teeny weeny throttle pedal on her automatic! Both airbags deployed and only cracked ribs. The kitchen units and white goods were bounced 500mm out from the wall, the Cedar built house absorbed most of the impact! Fortunately it was her own house. There is a small Supra link to this, after taking the photos, I used my Supra to pull the wee Daihatsu out from the wall, it pulled it easily at tick over, no throttle required! Chris Wilson
The honest answer would be it depends who it was. The sensible answer is she didn't. Perhaps it's because I am nearer her age than yours (probably) and I am getting a new perspective on elderly drivers One of this very forum's sections daily discusses antics which are unarguably foolhardy, but in not causing injury are nonetheless regarded as OK. I regard her misdemeanour in having this accident as foolhardy, but undoubtedly less premeditated than many tales from the Spirited Driving Chronicles. It was accident, and unless she regularly has them should be regarded with some deference to her age and probably generally good OVERALL driving standards. Younger people seem very keen to write off anyone over seventy as menace on the roads. There are plenty of eighty year olds I would rather have drive me to London than some thirty year olds. Chris Wilson
If she run over one of your chickens I'm sure you'd say different I guess I am just pretty tolerant of old people's mistakes. I did see some totally appalling driving, almost certainly due to age rather than alcohol or narcotics, the other month, but it ENTIRELY outside my character to take it under my own wing to address it. BazzaAlpine
I'll be 40 on Thursday if that helps and I have absolutely no issue with elderly drivers. Dangerouse, panicy drivers, yes. Elderly, no.
barneybrendan
the first thought that enterd my head was imagine if a child was walking along that path or a mother and new born baby.If i lived there i would definately be contacting dvla as i would never forgive myself if something happend later down the line. Anyone else seeing a pattern in her attempts to gracefully correct the slight mishaps Sounds like a scene only Mr Bean would be capable of, but atleast no one was seriously injured. Christmas always seems to lower the quality of driving, I guess people of all ages have more on their mind than usual at this time of year. Wishing the old dear (and everyones lawns!) a full and speedy recovery.
Scott
Accidents do happen, but to me a situation like this clearly shows if you should be driving a deadly weapon or not. If you cannot collect your thoughts well enough to instinctively turn off the engine, or just stamp on the brake, rather than rattle between D and R while flooring your car after an accident then what is the chances of you managing to hit the right pedal should an infant/child/adult/pensioner step out in front of you (or any other manor of incident that happens daily on the roads). I'm not saying this old dear should be locked up and the key thrown away but someone has to seriously look into whether she should remain a driving license holder.
