black_widow87
hi guys, noticed a strange sound which has been growing in the last week or so. Its almost like a creaking/rubbing noise which occurs in motion of the wheels. I think its coming from the front of the car and only noticeable when moving slowly. Is getting quite loud now and needs sorting. Any ideas?
Homer
Simple checks first - lock the steering, jack the car up and check for any play in the front wheel. If that's okay rotate the wheel and check for any noise or a rough feeling. It should rotate smoothly. If it's okay it's most likely something else. That said it could be any one of a dozen things based on the description
black_widow87
Righto! Nice little job for me on wednesday...cheers Homer;) Fingers & toes crossed its not an expensive one!
Swampy442
Also hold the wheel at 3 and 9 o clock and wiggle it, feel for play, there should be none, same at 6 and 12 o clock
mellonman
a front wheel bearing would get louder when turning round corners
Dnk
Check the wheel nuts are all tight ! then check for wheel bearing play and if that all seems to be fine check to see if one side is hotter than the other which indicates a caliper on one side is begining to seize. After you have driven it ofcourse Edited December 14, 2010 by Dnk (see edit history)
ellis
a front wheel bearing would get louder when turning round corners As does a seized brake caliper.
Dnk
It should be fairly obvious when you have the front wheels off the ground if the wheel bearing is on its way or if a caliper is seizing. Last time i checked a car for the same symptoms the wheel nuts were loose and one stud had sheared off, also had no spigot rings fitted to incorrect sized alloys. alex2jz
I had the same symptoms when a caliper seized. The sound was more prominent at low speeds, almost unnoticeable at high ones. Like Dnk said, check for hot rotors\wheels first.
Nic
When my near side front wheel bearing went I got very noticeable juddering when braking. It tends to be the near side bearings that go first as they are more susceptible to pot holes and curbing damage. As Homer describes they are easy to check if you get the weight off the wheels. As already said I'd also check wheel nuts and whether one of the calipers is sticking.
black_widow87
Cheers everyone for your help, gonna get the car in the air tomorrow aslong as the weather is fairly decent. Sounds to me more like a sticky calliper from what you guys are saying. Will let you all know tomorrow how i get on
bodilx6
a front wheel bearing would get louder when turning round corners It would? For sure? My DD (not the soop) have had a high wirring kind of noise for months now. Not getting worse or changing through corners. Pitch changing according to speed. But I have no play in the wheels or no sticking calipers. Can figure whats up. As its a fwd I'm thinking diff (not gearbox as sound doesn't change when declutching) maybe? CV Joint possibly ? a constant noise that goes up and down with speed and unafected by cornering does lean towards the diff on a FWD
bodilx6
Thanks man, I'll see what I can find out to check for that!

Swampy442
It would? For sure? Yeah, as you load up the bearing the noise increases and vice versa
black_widow87
Well guys, i had the car up today to find that offside rear wheel bearing is worn. Fair bit of play at both 6 o'clock and 9 o'clock. The noise also seems to be coming from that wheel so fingers crossed iv found the problem. Can anyone point me in the right direction to get one fairly cheap? Edited December 15, 2010 by black_widow87 (see edit history)
Nic
Toyota part number, the rears are not cheap. 90369-43005 Rear Wheel Bearing
Chris Wilson
They can be right bar stewards to fit. I have a 75 tonne press and sometimes it gets a workout on these. Without a decent press and the correct tooling for it I would suggest you get someone to change it for you. There's EVERY chance the hub flange will also be worn and need renewing (about £130 plus VAT from Toyota, and maybe the C/V joint splines will also have suffered wear. I have found good used shafts to remedy this, a new shaft from Toyota is expensive, for sure. I usually keep everything needed to do these jobs in stock. Ring me if you want more info. bodilx6
I would be suspecting a diff side bearing Thanks Chris, You mean the inner side CV joint then? Towards the diff? I will have a look as soon as I can get to my jack. Should I worry about sudden and violent failure, wheel joints comming off/locking up? Or will it just get slowly worse and worse? Chris Wilson
No, I mean the actual bearings that support the diff in the gearbox casing, not the joint itself.
bodilx6
No, I mean the actual bearings that support the diff in the gearbox casing, not the joint itself. Aah.. That probably equates a new gearbox. Probably the cheapest fix. 2-300£ I think. I will drain the oil and check for debris. I hope I can run it through the winter until the soop can take over
