Havard
Hi, Got my new CTEK charger today and it says in the instructions that you should connect a - ve earthed battery by connecting the charger to the positive side of the battery and then the negative to the chassis of the car. Beware not to connect to a fuel pipe or the negative side of the battery..!! I will do as the instructions ask but what is the problem with connecting to the negative side of the battery as you would do in a jump start? Just curious really..!! H. H. i think its just for safety, with older type batteries and cars you had to top up the battery with distilled water, what happens is that when the battery is being charged it breaks down the water into its elements (H2O) so there is hydrogen and oxygen in the battery which could explode if you connect or disconnect the charger leads (sparks). had this happen to me years ago. luckily today batteries and car charging systems are much better and are less likely to explode. regards Chris. Terminator
The instructions, will be written to help them comply with their public liability insurance. It is the same with Toyota telling you to remove the plastic cover from the oil filter before installing, you can bet that some muppet has fitted one with the cover in place an wrecked an engine, then tried to blame Toyota. Its a sign of the litigation culture we live in. This is obviously my personal opinion and I accept no responsibility for any action you take now or in the future, with any battery or charger. Gaz6002
Also, you could fry the ECU if you connect to the -ve terminal when jump-starting. I'd imagine it's the same for the product you've bought. Follow the instructions IMO http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?206927-Learnt-something-new-about-jump-starting&highlight=jump+start+ECU

Havard
Thanks for the replies guys. I have learned something today. I have jump started loads of cars, including my old NA by connecting both terminals accross to each connector on the battery, never had a problem. Probably more by luck than judgement..!! I'll connect the negative to the chassis tomorrow. H.
