RobSheffield
Ok, i have no idea what i need, but im looking around at domain registering companies, and i feel like i ought to have some idea Im looking at setting up on my own in car sales. I dont need e-commerce yet. I was considering registering my business name as a .com and a .co.uk that links to it. Then i can have all the complex and pretty stuff on the .com like the emails and the SSL certs etc, and have it hosted on a more expensive 'package' to include more space for pics etc. Above and beyond that...help! Any well recommended companies out there to register and/or host?
johnny g
webhosting.uk.com aren't bad - quite cheap too.
Attero
I used dynadot.com for my domain names.
far
all my company websites are with 1and1 - up time seems pretty good and you get the usual analytics tools which are quite useful, service is ok but call centres are offshored. The developers I use seem to get on with it ok HTH FAR
mistertwo
My company website is hosted with Servage.net. They're pretty good, you get stacks of features, loads of space, unlimited email accounts, SQL databases etc.
johnny g
Go for something cloud-based if you want to maximise uptime
Thorin
http://www.heartinternet.co.uk/web-hosting/ or I've heard good things about 1and1 also.
Dr_Doom
I used http://www.one.com to make a website for work after seeing a thread on the moneysavingexpert.com website. You also get the domain name included with the web space, email addresses and plenty of useful tools to check stats etc... I went for the smallest package (3GB) which is more than plenty for what i needed and it has a '.com' address. The first year is free after a £9 setup fee and it's only £0.90 a month after the first year. So far i've had no problems whatsoever! DamanC
Few good suggestions here. I use a multitude of them, another to the list http://www.ukhost4u.com/ Make sure you have a static IP if you go for a proper SSL solution.
jonathanc
Interested too. I guess it depends on your needs, budget and level of skills. I am helping my mate which uses FreeStart. Although it is MEGA easy to setup and run I find it frustrating sometimes as the features are limited. The package he is on doesn't allow any FTP uploads so I can't really modify the html too much... They have a selection of "themes" though but most looks pretty generic. I also can't do too much SEO on the website as everything is scripted and limited. I would like to hear about other package providers out there as well.
TubbyTwo
I use one.com for work, £9 a year at the moment for website hosting and domain name. http://www.one.com/en/ Also 123reg are quite good as well - some good christmas deals on at the moment. http://www.123-reg.co.uk/ they both have website tools to get you up and running fairly quickly. jonathanc
The thing about website builder tools is that sometimes they can be a bit crap... some of them don't generate proper URLs for pages created etc... not good for SEO. one.com is really interesteing might have a look at that
TubbyTwo
depends what your after really, they do some excellent hosting, if your handy with making a clean and simple website (have used dreamweaver before) your laughing. One.com also dont charge you until the domain name is setup and registered and the hosting is setup. So if there are any problems and its automatically cancelled you dont get charged. SupraShaun
For small site hosting I would say Heart Internet, they are more flexible than 1&1 in terms of allowing you to tweak your php.ini file for example (should you ever need to do something like this), plus their support is miles better. Should you ever need to progress to having your own server I would say Rackspace or UKFast, Rackspace being the "slightly" better option (and about twice the price ). jonathanc
Hmmm anyone recommend a good host that offers : - Unlimited domain hosting (or at least around 5?) - Unlimited bandwidth/space - Located in UK - Some sort of web builder tool or Control panel for the semi newbie like me - FTP access - mySQL (not necessary but would be lovely) - support eCommerce - Secure and stable (I've found hostgator but they are located in the US...) I would like to host my personal and maybe business sites in one place instead of having them all over the place. Would have to be affordable though... Wonder if such package exists? edit: found this. Seems good? or this lol seems better just need upfront payment and no refund after 30 days http://www.hostpapa.co.uk/features/
