Car running or not you should still get fluid, are the calipers new or used, if they are used check that the bleed nipple is not blocked, the pedal will still depress because of air in the system but nothing will come out, take the nipple right out and check its clear.

Because you work with the line that is farthest away from the reservoir first. This means you can fill the line up all the way to the bottom first and get the air out

Fair enough. I don't understand how it makes any difference which one you start with. I'm not doubting you, I just don't understand how it all works.

I like to understand things fully, rather than just know that something's right 'because it is' :)

how would i go about doing a full fluid change to the 5.1 stuff ? do i need to totally drain the oil first ?

You use the new fluid to push out the old, bleed one the brakes to get the level in the master cylinder down to the min level then just top up with the new fluid and bleed through as normal.

It should be obvious when the new fluid gets through the caliper, if its really old fluid in the system as mine was it'll be a differant colour, when you have the new fluid through each caliper, bleed them a bit more and job done.

:yeahthat:

I want to do this too... how much fluid am I likely to need to do the whole system? Does the ABS use the same fluid?

The abs is all part of the same system

look on here under Braking system

Motul RBF600 is a good fluid to use, not sure on quantity though

I changed to uk brakes and braided lines wasnt getting anything when i tried to bleed them then tried with engine running and they bled fine

I am not suggesting it does not help by running the engine. However, as Toyota, don't mention it in their service manual, I would be concerned that the fluid did not flow through the system without the assistance of the brake servo.

Are you just pumping the pedal with the bleed nipple open? Shutting it on the up-stroke of the pedal will always get the fluid moving. And you don't need the engine running. You should be able to fill a completely empty system with 1 litre but it's best to have 1.5 to be sure you don't get stuck with too little.
