Network help..

going to try and setup a network at my freinds office tommorrow - had a mare with it on Friday.

He's got a Windows Vista laptop, a Windows XP and a Windows 2000NT server and would like them all networked together so they can share files etc..

Currently they are all running into a BT business broadband hub unit.

I've tried setting them all to DHCP and they all appear to now be able to access the internet, but they are unable to share/access anything (althought pinging the individual machines works).. Any ideas on an easy to setup solution?

any help greatly appreiciated.

thanks

Craig.

How do you have the computers setup? Are they just stand alone machines or is the Server acting as a DC are you using AD to manage the PC's? What I would do is try creating a share on the Server and then see if you can access it from the machines. Folder permissions can play a big part when sharing between machines.

Hope this helps :)

Planning planning planning planning.

Simple route is have them all in the same workgroup.

Better solution is have them in a domain.

Is the business likely to grow in terms of users?

Are the file shares to be sat on the server?

Will people require different types of access to the files, ie read and read/write?

How is email to be handled?

Data protection and security an issue?

Backups?

Thanks chaps.. Well not too sure what the server mode is currently in - all 3 machines use to be in different companies so have completly different settings/anti-virus's/firewalls. - bit of a nightmare really.

The main files he'd like on one of the machines (guessing the nt4 server) where the other's can access it. For Backups he just uses a different pen drive each night.

At the moment, i can't connect to the pc's using \\ip-address\ although they can ping each other (don't know if the firewall's/software are blocking access). One of the machines had an 192.168 address, the other two havea 109. something address... don't know why...

I think what i might do is start from scratch on them all and just set them all up with dhcp, and see what happens....

To get you going..

Set each PC to use dhcp and not static.

Run one brand of AV/firewall, configure to taste

Set them all to be in the same workgroup.

Once complete sharing should kick in unless permissions have been set up.

Net view \\computername from the dos prompt will display available file shares.

Good luck
