Gaming Pc under 400 quid?

Septic

Recommended Posts

When I started out with PCs I always used to use the ones that came as an afterthought when you bought a case, had a couple go pop (300 watts back in the day) and wouldnt use them again. Corsair are good, I use Antec ones generally, think they do a true power range (or did) when each PSU is tested at the wattage it is rated at.

 Oh man....

Anyone selling any good PSUs for cheap? :(

Here's my current Christmas list. Buying end of Dec / early Jan probably

I would think twice about where you are doing your shopping. Almost every component is cheaper elsewhere. As an example you can get the 950 i7 for the same money you are paying for the 930.

Looks like it's going to be a monster though :)

I am not buying it from OCUK mate. I just use it as a guide for getting everything together, compatibility wise, and then go and buy from scan or ebuyer. OCUK are plebs with a crap forum. I have bought many systems from them and I got banned from their forum for raising the price of a G25 from £90 to £125 because of the interest lol :)

I used to have an i7 920 OC'd to 4.0GHz, with the ASUS R2E, 2x 5870s, a 32gb and a 80gb SSD, HAF 922 etc etc. Hand built. Now that was a beast. Awwwwww those were the days. Now I have a Supra with oily hands and methanol smelling clothes ahah

Gaming is cleaner

You know we can build your spec you have posted cheaper :)

I hope you're not talking to me Daman!

I sent an e-mail to the company that sold me the PSU:

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing to you to enquire about the above item, which I have recently purchased.

It has recently come to my attention that Power Supply Units (PSUs) of a similar nature are suspectible to premature destruction which could lead to the subsequent destruction of other components for example the motherboard, GPU, CPU etc.

Could you please confirm any reliability issues regarding the above item and, in the event that the PSU is destroyed (along with other PC Components), what are your refund policies?

Your help on this matter is much appreciated.

Yours faithfully,

Gaz

This is their REPLY:

Hi there,

The Power Supplies we sell are mostly relaible but occassionaly you can have a PSU which can last a few hours or even a good 5 years. PSU's can cause issues by a static charge from the Mains Supply, a bad earth inside the PC Case or sometimes it can be one of those things. A faulty Motherboard can also cause a Power Supply to blow so it's very difficult to know which is at fault when hardware faults occur.

We cover a full 12 months warranty on all our Power Supplies but like all other Sellers and Shops we do not cover any thrid party work or cover damages towards any other hardware other than what is purchased from ourselves.

The best advice I can offer you is to make sure the case is not earthing inside and to always use a surge protector.

If you have any issues at all with your purchase please contact me any times.

Kind Regards

Chris

Right...should have listened to you guys in the first place. So what is a surge protector?

Time to get a decent PSU

Probably you too Septic, and you would have had our support, you wouldn't have to put it together yourself and you would know what to have done if it went wrong. :)

"Mostly reliable"

A surge protector is:

Will the surge protector help??

Daman now you tell me! I was SO close to ordering from you, was going to PM you to ask for your number to discuss it on the phone and last minute, my little brother (who it seems I will begin to despise) stopped me. He said the specs on the PC you recommended were inferior so I should go with the list he did.

Oh well lesson learnt.

Have you got a good PSU for a decent price for sale?

Yup :)

Take a look around the site, in particular the Erebus i7 Custom PC. Strip down the peripherals and we should be around the same, and then I can see about throwing in overclocking, better thermal paste etc :)

Septic im affriad we don't sell components separately, its all about the builds. Just remember to stick a hot poker up your brothers arse when its blows up :D

/facepalm

Oh man- I should have come to you. I'm tempted to send the stuff back but it would be such a major headache.

Thanks for the help though Daman, I really appreciate it. Now, time to think of ways to torture my brother when I finish work.

No problems bud, you may find that your rig lasts 5 years without a hitch and ill look like a t1t!

I haven't been trying to nail a sale from you, its Christmas and our workload is up 500%!, just trying to steer you in the right direction as a fellow club member. :)

Thanks Daman

The site looks awesome. My first real gaming PC was built by someone and I had huge problems. I had problems on my second that I built, but at least I didn't have to send it back or anything

Also, you don't really sell my list. This was chosen from experience as I know it works and is easy to OC. The ASUS R2E is old now (superseded by the R3E) but I know it is a beast. Also, I don't want a M-ATX mobo which I cannot seem to change. I also want a decent SSD.

:) Anything you can do? Can I select my own list?

I never once thought that of you Daman my man. Also, if Abz gave me his word then I had nothing to worry about. I won't be using the PSU I bought- I'll be looking to buy the ones listed here by ScottM and others. I can't afford to take the risk. SO hopefully it will run for 5 years +!

If you want something real specific then compile a list and send it over and I can see what I can do, but be aware if its lots of things we don't normally do then price is going to head upwards.

I don't know where you got M-ATX From? We use the ASUS P6X58D-E. It will clock a 1366 chip as good as a rampage extreme as the ceiling will be the heat.

Corsair Force SSD's are one of the best SSD's out there, we have them....

I see now. I clicked More Info and it has a list, not just info on the one selected. That might be an upgrade feature for the site. I didn't like having to scroll :)

I understand your point about spec. I'll configure one and let you know

Obvious changes

I want crossfire :)

I want a push/pull arrangement on the H50 with decent fans - 2 x Nocs?

Can you help with this?

Hey guys, I'm just building my pc at the moment (trying). The RAM chips wont slot into the motherboard. Am I to assume I've bought the wrong RAM sticks?

They are 240 pin DDR3 RAM sticks and the motherboard is also 240 pin DDR3 compatible.

Edit: it works now

You mean boot the laptop OS using the PC hardware? If so, then I highly doubt it?

No no. Basically I want to install an OS on the new computer. My brother is currently trying to use a USB to do that. I don't know what will happen if I turn it on; will command prompt come up etc. Really wishing I bought Daman's setup now lol.
