Septic
Hey guys. I was just wondering if you guys were aware of any deals for gaming PCs for below 400 quid (can't do pound sign on my HTC for some reason). I just want the tower itself without monitor etc. Obviously, considering the budget, its not going to be top spec but a decent one with a good graphics card and RAM would do. Anyone who suggests a good link which I use to buy the PC gets a gift! (No Paul, its not a bomb)

Scott
You will struggle to get any kind of real performance for £400 unfortunately. I would suggest buying a couple of components with the money you have at the moment and building them up over the next couple of months.... either that or just save up some more. Decent GFX card is easily £100-£200 on its own Decent PSU is going to be £70 Decent Motherboard is going to be £100 absolute minimum Decent CPU for proper gaming is going to be £150 absolute minimum 6GB of fast, branded ram is easily another £100 Couple in a decent case, a decent HDD or 2 and a decent DVD-RW and you are on the dangerous end of double your budget. Scott
Oh yeah, £ sign on the HTC. Press the 123# button on the bottom right (the one that gets access to numbers keyboard), press the 1/2 button on the left hand side to scroll to page 2 of the symbols. The £ sign should be third in from the left on the top row if it is the same as mine. HTH.
a98pmalcolm
Daman is your man.. Im selling a perfect motherboard if you want it, been reconditioned by Gigabyte so its like new. It has 2 PCI Ex slots so you can upgrade to 2 graphics cards in the future and its not bad for overclocking !! If your interested let me know and i will sort a price out for you. Then thats a good start to keeping the cost down mate. Also as its a DDR2 board that keeps the cost of the RAM down My e-bay link: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=160513910906&ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT
Septic
Ah appreciate the info guys. Actually I'm not looking for a beast of a gaming computer, just one that can run WoW smoothly and editing some game videos I intend to record via a capture card. ScottM, what gfx card have you got out of interest? I might just get a half decent tower at Currys for it but I'm not sure. How can Damanc help me? Has he got some sort of crazy liquid cooled Alienware type PC? Malcolm- appreciate the offer. I'm just gonna go over the details with my bro first. Septic
Okay just had a chat with my brother and I'm gonna go build my pc. Like I said, I just want to run WoW smoothly. So I think this is the parts list: I only have: * Case * 400 Watt power supply adapter So what I need going from your list Scott is: Motherboard CPU RAM Hard drive Cd Drive My brother reckons he can get all that off ebuyer and eBay for under £400 for my specifications. I don't necessarily want a comp that runs a beast like Crysis or something. Surely this would be enough? Thanks Scott for teaching me the £ sign
DamanC
Check my Signature Septic £400 will get you this puppy, designed for WOW users: AMD Athlon Gaming PC Remember cheap unbranded cases and power supply's will get you no where. Hey I'm quite interested. I've also compiled my own list for a built computer. Can you please let me know what you think of it? 1. Gfx card: AMD (ATI) Radeon HD 6850 1GB Ebay: £145 Buy it Now- Can probably bargain with the price http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/AMD-ATI-Radeon-HD-6850-3D-Graphics-Card-1GB-NEW-/250732296048?pt=UK_Computing_Computer_Components_Graphics_Video_TV_Cards_TW&hash=item3a60cf3770 2. Motherboard:Asrock AMD Socket AM2+ AM3 DDR2 & DDR3 Mainboard http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Asrock-AMD-Socket-AM2-AM3-DDR2-DDR3-Mainboard-/140484239553?pt=UK_Motherboards_CPUs&hash=item20b58360c1 3. AMD Athlon X2 5000+ Unlocks To Quad Core Phenom II X4 http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/AMD-Athlon-X2-5000-Unlocks-Quad-Core-Phenom-II-X4-/140486088454?pt=UK_Motherboards_CPUs&hash=item20b59f9706 The reason for purchasing this motherboard is because it allows the CPU to be unlocked into a Quad Core Phenom and the motherboard looks pretty good too. 4. RAM: Corsair 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 1600MHz/PC3-12800 XMS3 i5 Memory Kit CL9(9-9-9-24) 1.65V http://www.ebuyer.com/product/173122 http://image.ebuyer.com/UK/w0173122_normal.jpg 5. Seagate ST3250318AS 250GB Hard Drive SATAII 7200rpm 8MB Cache - OEM http://www.ebuyer.com/product/159691 6. Power supply: EZCool 500 Watt Quiet Silent PC Power Supply PSU 500W http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/EZCool-500-Watt-Quiet-Silent-PC-Power-Supply-PSU-500W-/360310738482?pt=UK_Computing_PowerSupplies_EH&hash=item53e4318e32 I've already got a large ATX Alienware style case. Total comes to roughly £350. What are your thoughts? Daman, what is the club discount for members? It says that the Athlon II Gaming PC is Vista and 7 ready. Do you get any of the OS' with the PC? Nice little set up for £400 I use 2 of the ATI Sapphire HD4580 cards and im impressed with them, i had a bad experience with Nvideia to ATI all way... I think you should go with Damans set up as it will be built for you, you know the parts are goin to be good quality and its all up an running, unlike with e-bay you get sent the part and you coud get a dodgy Ram stick or sumin. That asrock mobo and the cheap power supply look utter rubbish mate.. Deffo Damans set up mate

Had 2 nvidia cards before and nothing but hassle. When the last one broke i borrowed an ati to get by that worked perfectly and when i built this one i got an ati hd and its been great
Scott
Don't touch Asrock with a barge pole. Also steer clear of motherboards with dual memory types. Don't skimp on the case or the powersupply. If you get decent items they will last you a LONG time and be very efficient.
ozz
I'll second that, unless they have really improved then ASROCK are dreadful. They come out very low in benchmark tests, wouldn't touch one with someone elses pole.
Septic
Oh thanks for that! Yeah the final list has changed a bit. What do you guys think of these parts? Scott
IMO you should quadruple your budget for the PSU. Look to something like corsair
Angarak
1st rule of building a PC > Dont skimp on a decent PSU! Some of the top end graphic cards require some serious wattage when running at their max, a 400/500W PSU may not be up to the job of providing enough consistent power, you'll also need to check if the PSU you buy has the correct power connectors for the graphics card you will use. Most graphic card manufacturers will recommend a certain PSU wattage for their card(s).
Septic
IMO you should quadruple your budget for the PSU. Look to something like corsair Is a good PSU really that important? I'll do it if you think its vital to have a Corsair one. Is everything else okay in your opinion?
TonytotheB
EDIT: Wow, given above I change my mind. But I wouldn't spend less than £1k on a gaming PC What about keyboard, mouse, mousemat, headset, soundcard, joystick??? Unless you have all of these, the list is CPU CPU Cooler (plus fans) Motherboard RAM Graphics card Monitor PSU CD Drive Hard drive Case (that can house all of this) Keyboard Mouse Mousemat Soundcard (if not going onboard sound) Headset / speakers
Angarak
Is a good PSU really that important?... Yes it is, think of all of the components within your PC and external peripherals that will require power, the GPU will consume the most power, hence manufacturers usually recommend a certain wattage or even provide a certified list of PSUs (ie: Ati 5850 PSU: http://support.amd.com/us/certified/power-supplies/Pages/listing.aspx). A good PSU will provide sufficient stable power to prevent the computer crashing or even damage to critical components within your PC case. If I see a manufacturer recommend a 500W PSU for a graphics card I get one that is atleast 600W (I prefer OCZ ones, but there are many good ones available).
