Where can an oil filler cap disappear to?

I was topping up the oil in the MR2 earlier, when I stupidly knocked the oil filler cap down into the engine bay. I saw it bouce around, so figured it wouldn't be too difficult to reach down and get it...

...three deep cuts to the arm later, two hours in the freezing cold, jacking the car up, shining lights everywhere down there and I still can't find the f***ing thing

Anyone else ever had this happen?

On a side note, if anyone else has a spare oil filler cap that they can send my way, please let me know..

I lost a small air filter like this once, the one that goes on the PCV system when you fit a Boostlogic turbo kit. I found it about 6 months later when I took the undertray off, gunked up and a bit battered but still there after at least one 180mph run

:D - I think the engine tray is the only option I haven't explored, just didn't fancy doing it tonight in the pitch black.

But having gone to Halfords, a local parts store and a toyota garage - I'm still without one.

Any suggestions what to do in the mean time to protect it?

I was working on a fellow members car during the summer. I knocked my 1/4 inch socket that fell down the back of the engine. Like you I thought to myself "how hard can this be to recover". I have never seen it since :(

Didn't Douglas Adams write about a planet full of biros, or socks? Somewhere that these objects re-appear once they have dropped into a wormhole.

It is a well known fact that most cars have a 'black hole' where dropped parts and tools are taken to another dimension, never to be seen again.

Remember working on an old Rolls and dropping a bolt, had to get it up in the air and remove the engine under tray. The tray was held on by around 50 bolts - Roll Royce's philosophy seemed to be, where 1 bolt would do, let's stick 5 in there instead! - took forever to get the bloody thing off, retrieve the bolt and fix it back on again.

One of these flexible magnetic tools comes in handy in such a situation.
