First thing to do is setup Google Web Master Tools. That'll give you some good advice on your current setup. Also read the articles listed on the bottom right of that page - all solid advice to make sure you have a good basis to start from.

Chasing back links is a long arduous process - there's LOTS more that can be done which will give good results.

DMOZ is/was considered to be the holy grail of a backlink. PR8 and a collection of strictly human edited links soon let to the google directory becoming a mirror of DMOZ, where it still is.

Steve - Google will use a DMOZ listing as a hight quality back link and nothing more (unless you use the directory), however quality back links form a good SERP and therefore listing. :)

Getting on DMOZ is another story, you submit your listing and wait.....a long time! I have 2 listings on DMOZ, one was posted after about two years and the the other as soon as I became an editor ;) :D
