Dave
i am wrapping this manual gear surround in carbon and want to take off the plastic ring that holds the gaiter to get a nice finish , whats the best way to do it without breaking the plastic ring . mwilkinson
I would either use a scalpel to scrape the head of the plastic lug or carefully drill them out.

Dave
yeah thats what i thought the [scalpel method].so when ive took the top of the lugs off i should be able to re-attach the ring with glue ?? thanks
Terminator
If you carefully slice them vertically toward the plate, you can leave enough of the lug to melt with a soldering iron on reassembly.
Nic
If you pull on the ring around each stud they will break away.

Note you may break the stud at the base doing it the way I described, you'll need to glue the gaiter back on later.
