hodge
Hi guys After refreshing my engine which of the above should I go for. Now the pistons, rings, rods and crank went straight back in so nothing to run in really. Just new bearings, gaskets and pumps and 264 cams. Should I error on the side of caution and stick some mineral oil in for a few 100 miles or go straight for the fully synthetic. Thanks John

paddynewman
I only ever and will ever run semi synth. Even in my GSXR1000's, the semi synth is perfect, Ive never experienced any problems. The Supra has semi, I know being an NA probably doesnt really matter too much regarding that.. but the GSXR is recommended for synthetic...but at £40 to fill it.. and £28 on semi and its definitely run hard.. ive not noticed any issues (one is a k3 and one is a k6 GSXR...neither have had issues)

A mineral oil is mainly used to bed the rings in, if you havent changed them then they should be fine although you should have rehoned it while it was apart. I would still use a mineral oil for the first run up as you only want to run it for a little then change it. I use Millers runnning in oil as it has cleaning agents in it as well and really helps with a new engine.

Ive only ever rebuilt 2 125cc engines..then I use cheapy mineral for 150 miles, drop it and redo the same again, but given hes just re-using, I just advised the semi route. The bores were perfectly round Lee I took the block into work on night shift and clocked all the bores in, in a few different places, and had no marks or lumps in what so ever so I didn't want to change anything so I left it as was. Ok I'll use some running in oil for the initial start up. Cheers for the help, I appreciate it.
ellis
Mineral!! Definitely! My UK spec rebuild used synthetic, rushed past the piston rings and shat the fronk crank seal (mechanic error!!)
michel lane
i just used a cheap fully synth oil 0/30 to flush it through ran it for a bit on idle 1-2 hours. Then replaced it with 10/40 full syn in and ran that for a week and then changed it for 10/50 fully synth for the dyno session and changed it again after. We used to do this with all the cars , had no problems with oil seals or anyother matter.

I assume you mean engines that havent has a rebore, you must always use a mineral oil in an engine that has been bored, been honed, had new rings ect.
