evanshaw
Is there anything I can use to give my FMIC a good cleaning and a method anyone would recommend! Mine was on the car when I bought it and looks pretty shabby! I think it's ok physically, i.e. no badly damaged fins or dents, but I'd really like to clean it up! Any suggestions? evanshaw
No suggestions then? Some sort of bleach or acid maybe?
Homer
Note sure if you mean cleaning out the fins area or the shiney side bits. To clean the fins I use a small amount of Sonax in a pressure washer and blast all the crud out of there! Not got round to the shiney bits yet as I need to remove the front bumper the get to them

Homer
Yup, is that bad? I've only cleaned it once though!
Zed
No suggestions then? Some sort of bleach or acid maybe? I've been wondering about this too, although not with something quite as strong as bleach. Maybe one of those shower limescale removers, do they contain bleach ?
Miguel
Jet wash works well BUT a low pressure one . The last thing you want to do is A. break fins of ( due to age ) B. bend em all will have an affect on the eficiency of the cooler. I generaly use a spray on brake cleaner or degreaser and gently air line them to clean them up. You have more control with an airline and brake cleaner spray/ de greaser is not as corosive as some acids wich eat ally .

Garden hose and a bit of spray on de-greaser should be okay?

Like I say a power wash is ok as long as its not that powerfull ....I've seen the attemps of a few with a power wash and it left the SMIC with no fins just rows. Just take care with them, they are getting old now and ally can become very brittle.
JohnA
And *really* avoid products such as "cillit bang", they eat aluminium for breakfast I'd stick to soapy water myself, along with a soft paintbrush
merckx
Could also use a vaccuum with the small brush attached to suck some of the dirt out, but you would have to be gentle.
evanshaw
Thanks for the ideas guys! I like the idea of the degreaser spray and then just gently hosing it off! Would that AutoSol paste be ok for the shiny bits around the edges?
cashpoint
How about alloy wheels cleaner? Anyone tried that.
