CJ
I have been looking for a car for my son and also checking out insurance quotes. He is looking at a Saxo VTR and wants to start his own insurance policy to build up his NCB. Anyway, we have had a quote off Admiral for just over £1000 for a 10 month policy and just for TPF&T which in itself is horrendous but then we asked about their monthly payment plan and that then turns out to be just under £148 pcm or £1480! So, a £480 interest charge over 10 months - wtf is that all about?
Swampy442
I hate insurance companies, pain in the arse FWIW theres an 18yr old lad where I work who has a normal Clio, nothing fancy, and he's paying 2400 a yeatr!
stevie_b
I know insurance companies do charge to pay monthly, but that seems particularly toppy. I sometimes pop into UFKN (Ford Fiesta forum): a lot of the people on there are very young, and their premiums are often very large.
Terminator
Try the Post office, we got some cracking deals from them recently £340 for the M5 fully comp, M3 £350. Not sure what they are like for young drivers though.
Chris Wilson
Instalments are expensive on car insurance, better he waits and saves so he can pay in one hit. What's the cheapest car to insure these days, then? My wife and I have been on my trader's policy for so long I have lost all touch with what the man in the street is paying for insurance these days. I know some younger Supra owners pay what I think is a ludicrous amount. The last "exotic" car I was quoted on as a none trader was my mother's DB5 in 1973, when I was 18. It was an eye watering and simply implausible, for the time, £365 a year, a pound a day. How things have changed. She paid £1100 for the car in 72. That sort of quote, back then, was a polite way of the insurance company telling you to sod off.
Guigsy
A saxo ESP a vtr is a notorious cruize type car 1000 tpf&t seems about right. My insurance on a 1.2 Clio when I was 20 was 1400 fully comp

The Raven
Agreed VTR is probably not a great car to start a NCB on. What about a normal Saxo? atleast till he has one years NCB?
straightsix
We just had to insure the eldest (19 years old with 1 year NCB) on a 1.1 Peugeot 106 Diesel. I was shocked at the £1458.00 premium. All the 'specialist' insurers were a waste of time. It defies logic when his girlfriend (same age with 0 NCB) has only been driving for a year, has written off two cars (her fault) and only pays 650 odd pounds for a 1.3 Ford Fiesta!! Snooze
The insurance companies do seem to be loading a lot of the current burden onto young drivers these days. Was always more expensive, but it seems to be getting significantly higher. I wonder what the (age of driver vs. number and cost of claims) stats are like that cause that. CJ
Agreed VTR is probably not a great car to start a NCB on. What about a normal Saxo? atleast till he has one years NCB? We thought this too until we strated to get quotes and they vary considerably from 1.1 - 1.6 but not in the way you think. Some cars were more expensive than the Saxo VTR and some cheaper. There was no difference at all in the 1.6 VTR to a 1.25 Fiesta. Bloody crackers eh?
Gaz6002
Fully comp is likely to be cheaper than third party fire and theft in this situation.
TubbyTwo
just had my "best price" letter from elephant, £200 more than last year, so i ring them up and they take it back to almost the original price. Money grabbing bastards.

Tyson
I am 21 and had a MG ZR 160 before the supe and if I had insured it this year instead of the supe it would have been 1250 quid. The supe cost me less than 1000 to insure ...... WTF?

Chris Wilson
Don't forget that you are paying for all the claims where uninsured drivers are involved, exaggerated claims for compensation, and blatant scams. The buck gets passed. I have seen several people on this forum encouraging claims for none existent whiplash, falsification of lists of modifications, and other dubious practices, the blame doesn't always lie with the insurance company. I too think motor insurance cover is excessive, but I can also see why an insurance companies risks have gone up many fold in recent years. snake
my kids were paying around £900 for 1.3 fiesta's the cars were only worth about £1500. if you take out the 10 month policy make sure it still qualifies as a years ncb .BE aware that a little dent may result in the car being written off, even when your not to blame.[sAD][/sAD]

This is true when I went to the meets there were quite a few muppets there whose driving skills left a lot to be desired.
